Mitsubishi, a brand not often at the forefront of discussions, is planning a significant revival in North America. While it may seem like a stretch, the automaker is gearing up to launch multiple new models over the next few years, including an off-road SUV and the much-beloved Delica van.
These upcoming vehicles were hinted at in Mitsubishi’s “Momentum 2030” five-year business strategy, which outlines exciting prospects for its North American offerings. The company plans to introduce one new or redesigned vehicle each year from the 2025 to 2029 fiscal years. These models will encompass a variety of powertrains, ranging from traditional combustion engines to hybrids, plug-in hybrids (PHEVs), and electric vehicles (EVs). Mitsubishi also intends to extend its reach into two new vehicle segments and expects its U.S. lineup to grow from the current four models to seven—a noteworthy increase.
The vehicles hinted at in Mitsubishi’s teaser are largely recognizable. The first two in the front row are clearly Outlanders, while the middle-right position in the back row resembles the Eclipse Cross. The older models—Mirage and Outlander Sport—are not displayed, as both are nearing the end of their production runs.
Among the new vehicles, the top right appears to be the Xforce crossover, primarily marketed in Southeast Asia. However, the most intriguing model is at the center, which is the D:X concept—Mitsubishi’s glimpse of the next-generation Delica. This highly sought-after van has an enthusiastic following in the U.S., where collectors import older Japanese versions admired for their ruggedness and charm. There seems to be considerable potential in this niche, and Mitsubishi appears to recognize it.
Further excitement arises when examining the top left, where an unexposed concept SUV is showcased. Featuring short overhangs, a compact body, ample ground clearance, and a boxy design, it resembles a blend of the MI-Tech concept and the Triton pickup. However, it appears too small to directly compete with models like the Jeep Wrangler, possibly aligning more closely with offerings like the Ford Bronco Sport or Subaru Crosstrek Wilderness.
The vehicle in the center-left back row remains a mystery. It looks like a small crossover, but its specific role alongside the other compact SUVs mentioned is uncertain. It might be a reworked Nissan model, as Mitsubishi has indicated that some vehicles will be assembled using resources from the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance. However, they may not disappoint; many are fans of the Outlander, which is based on the Nissan Rogue.
Amid this lineup, enthusiasts may be disappointed to see no sign of a successor to the Lancer Evolution. Nevertheless, Mitsubishi is under pressure from investors to bring the Evo back to market. Furthermore, the teaser image lists only six models, while Mitsubishi’s North American strategy confirms seven. If there isn’t an Evo in the mix, it’s possible that the unknown model could be a hybrid pickup.
Overall, one can only hope that the Delica and the compact off-roader will be available in the United States, rather than limited to the Canadian or Mexican markets—such a restriction would be disappointing for fans in North America..
