While the first-generation Mercedes-AMG GT features a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8, the AMG GT3 racing variant has relied on the naturally aspirated 6.2-liter V8 engine from its predecessor, the SLS model. As Mercedes prepares to unveil the new generation GT3 racer equipped with a turbocharged engine, AMG showcased the GT3 Edition 130Y Motorsport during Monterey Car Week.

This year marks 130 years of Mercedes’ involvement in motorsport, beginning with a Daimler-engined vehicle that won the inaugural automobile race, a 126-kilometer journey from Paris to Rouen. At Pebble Beach, Mercedes showcased a variety of iconic cars, including the 1952 300SL race car that inspired the design of the GT3 130Y.

The GT3 Edition 130Y boasts a striking silver and blue color scheme that recalls the 300SL models victorious in the Carrera Panamericana and the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Its exterior features simple racing gumballs adorned with the number 130, along with the AMG crest placed on the roof and side skirts. The vehicle also includes unique 18-inch wheels reminiscent of the new GT model and abundant carbon fiber accents. Inside, the vehicle impresses with a white and blue tartan seat, brown leather headrest, an aluminum steering wheel with walnut wood grips, and exclusive badges and graphics.

With no racing restrictions, the Edition 130Y surpasses the performance of actual GT3 race cars. Its 6.2-liter V8 generates 671 horsepower, an increase of over 100 horsepower, thanks to the absence of an air restrictor and a less muted exhaust system. Additionally, the sequential six-speed transmission features modified gear ratios. The car achieves 15 percent greater downforce due to redesigned intakes, louvers, the underbody and diffuser, and an expanded lower splitter and rear wing. Moreover, the 130Y incorporates a Drag Reduction System (DRS) inspired by DTM and Formula 1, allowing it to reach speeds exceeding 196 mph.

Though not homologated for any specific racing series, the 130Y incorporates all necessary safety features akin to the regular GT3, including a carbon-fiber safety cell, a five-point harness, a fire-suppression system, and an emergency hatch. Unlike the steel brake discs used on GT3 racers, this model features lightweight carbon-ceramic brakes. Earlier this year, AMG factory driver Jules Gounon set a new track record at Mount Panorama Circuit in Australia, completing a lap in 1 minute 56.605 seconds, surpassing the previous GT car record by 2.074 seconds.

Mercedes will produce only 13 units of the Edition 130Y GT3, with a starting price around $1.1 million. Buyers will also receive an exclusive car cover, a 1:8 scale model, a custom Bell helmet, branded Puma racing apparel, a seat-matching bag, and a certificate of authenticity.
