Volkswagen has given the 2025 Golf R a subtle update, much like it did with the GTI. The company has eliminated the manual transmission option in both vehicles, which may disappoint some enthusiasts of these sporty hatchbacks. The new Golf R features a redesigned infotainment system, boasting a larger screen that has grown from the previous 10.2 inches. However, the design appears somewhat awkward, as if the screen was hastily added without proper integration into the dashboard. VW describes the new interior design of the Golf R as having a “free-standing display,” which many might interpret as “we added it last minute.”

Given that the Golf R is aimed at driving aficionados, VW markets it as the “world’s fastest Volkswagen,” sharing that title with the Arteon R Shooting Brake. This claim is supported by a slight boost in engine power, now delivering 328 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque. However, the manufacturer seems to be complicating the driving experience, which frustrates enthusiasts. While the GTI has reinstated its steering wheel buttons, the updated Golf R retains the same bothersome capacitive keys it has always used. For those who dislike touchscreens, the new version is nearly always in view, being significantly larger than before. (At least the HVAC touch controls are now backlit.)

The push to modernize the Golf R’s interior to give it a new and tech-savvy look is only compounding issues. Automakers seem to have an obsession with equipping vehicles with larger displays each year, without considering the vast differences between using a device on your couch and navigating a hefty vehicle.

Here’s a snapshot of the previous Golf R interior for comparison.

Don’t linger on the gear shifter, which features its familiar and reassuring H-pattern. Observe how the previous 10-inch screen did not dominate the view. Although smaller, it seemed integrated seamlessly into the dashboard, unlike the new 12.9-inch model that protrudes awkwardly, making it challenging to ignore while driving. It occupies a significant amount of space, positioned uncomfortably near the steering wheel, which could distract drivers in critical moments.

Nevertheless, there are several positives. The latest Golf R comes upgraded in many aspects, including interior, exterior, and overall performance. The 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four engine now gets a minor enhancement, adding 13 horsepower. An available Akrapovič titanium exhaust system has been refined for a more aggressive sound. The optional forged 19-inch “Warmenau” wheels, named after VW’s R headquarters city, each weigh a mere 17.6 pounds to help improve unsprung mass. The car maintains its all-wheel-drive setup with torque vectoring, while the suspension features adaptive dampers. Enhancements to the front and rear improve aerodynamics and brake cooling, complemented by new LED matrix headlights and customizable taillight effects. Plus, the new illuminated VW badge adds a modern touch.

Interestingly, the Golf R now includes a towing feature for the first time, capable of handling a maximum trailer weight of 4,188 pounds, which is a welcome addition. However, the incorporation of ChatGPT into VW’s updated infotainment system may detract from the overall experience and further diminish the allure of the oversized display.
