Kia is expanding its electric vehicle (EV) range with the introduction of the EV3. This new model joins the stylish EV6 hatchback and the larger EV9 three-row SUV. The EV3 presents itself as a smaller and more cost-effective addition to the lineup, clearly drawing inspiration from its bigger counterpart.

At first glance, the EV3 bears similarities to the EV9, featuring distinct boxy wheel arches, a vertical front design, a floating C-pillar, and unique headlights. However, it presents a slightly softer and more rounded appearance compared to the EV9, evoking a hybrid look between the EV9 and the Volvo EX30 — a compliment, indeed. Kia seems to be embracing a futuristic design aesthetic, making the EV3 resemble something out of the game Starfield.

If you were hoping for drastic changes in the EV3’s interior compared to the EV9, you may be disappointed. The dashboard and door panels are simplified variants, but the cantilevered center console and dual-screen layout maintain a design similar to the EV9. The two-spoke steering wheel features a unique upward curve at the bottom, giving it an amusing “smiling” appearance. A three-spoke option is available, distinctly different from the EV9’s, but otherwise, the similarities remain, which is not necessarily a drawback.

Beneath its exterior, the EV3 uses a familiar platform known to those familiar with Hyundai’s lineup: the E-GMP. This framework accommodates two battery options, either 58.3 kWh or 81.4 kWh. Regardless of the selected battery size, the EV3 utilizes a single electric motor capable of producing 201 horsepower and 208 lb-ft of torque. Kia claims that the EV3 can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 7.5 seconds and achieve a maximum range of up to 372 miles on a full charge, according to WLTP testing. However, since WLTP figures often present optimistic expectations, a more conservative projection of around 300 miles might be more realistic.

For most buyers, performance at stoplights isn’t a primary concern; practicality and range take precedence. The Kia EV3 offers 16 cubic feet of rear storage space and just under a cubic foot in the front trunk.

The cabin also boasts some impressive technology. It includes Hyundai’s comprehensive suite of advanced autonomous safety features, and a notable feature called I-Pedal 3.0 that allows drivers to adjust their regenerative braking levels.

Kia is on a successful trajectory with its electric vehicle offerings, and the EV3 reflects that momentum. The brand has refined its standout design from the EV9 into a more compact version while introducing technology that rivals competitors. The EV3 will first be available in showrooms in South Korea starting this July, followed by a rollout to Europe and North America. Although no pricing details have been provided, it is expected to be more affordable than its siblings, with the EV6 starting at $43,975, including destination charges.
