Acura is once again set to impress at Monterey Car Week, showcasing a new electric concept vehicle that aims to lead the brand into its next era of EVs. The luxury automaker has shared a teaser image highlighting the vehicle’s rear and lightbar, but further details will be revealed during the event.

The automaker describes this concept as a “segment-defying sport utility vehicle”, which typically refers to an SUV with a tapered roofline. However, with the vast array of SUV segments available today, it’s debatable whether it can truly qualify as segment-defying. Nevertheless, Acura confirms this concept will enter production, serving as a preview of its inaugural model built in Ohio on a new dedicated EV platform.

While it might seem like a stretch to label their new model as defying segments, the concept shown in the teaser image does not resemble a typical “sporty utility vehicle.” With a small rear window and a subtly integrated ducktail spoiler, the design appears more akin to a sedan’s trunk rather than an SUV. The angle of the photo might be deceiving, but the overall silhouette seems lower compared to standard SUVs, particularly due to the wider rear haunches in contrast to the roofline. Regardless of its final form, Acura emphasizes that the vehicle will prioritize performance.

Although this unnamed electric vehicle will not be Acura’s first-ever EV— a title held by the ZDX Type S— it will indeed be the first to use the brand’s architecture, distinguishing it from the Ultium-based ZDX. This platform is expected to be shared among all Honda and Acura electric vehicles, as well as those from their joint venture with Sony, Afeela. More information about this new Acura model will be unveiled shortly.
