An intriguing find in the wild – the sturdy Tesla Cybertruck was seen cruising proudly, adorned with a sophisticated rooftop sensor suite. Much akin to the setups observed on other Tesla models such as the Tesla Semi, the Cybertruck’s rooftop contraption seems to feature advanced LiDAR sensors.

Social media platform X was abuzz with images of the Cybertruck flaunting its unique sensor suite. The unit spotted was a Release Candidate (RC) model, supposedly roaming the streets of San Jose, California, yet donning Texas license plates, adding to its mystique.

What sets this rooftop sensor suite in the Cybertruck apart is its distinct placement. Unlike the customary installation on Tesla models like the Model Y and Model X, the Cybertruck’s sensors elegantly extend beyond the roof perimeter and delve into the truck bed.

Tesla’s modus operandi usually involves utilizing specially selected test vehicles rigged with LiDAR setups to amass data and validate visual information. This methodology has stirred speculation among Tesla skeptics, given Elon Musk’s prominent stance against incorporating LiDAR in mass-produced vehicles.

In a previous patent, Tesla detailed this methodology, highlighting the use of an “auxiliary sensor, such as radar, LiDAR, or another sensor,” to gather training data for refining machine learning models. The presence of these sensors atop the Cybertruck signifies ongoing development of the electric pickup’s driver-assist functionalities.

Although Cybertruck deliveries commenced in late 2023, the all-electric pickup is still bereft of Autopilot or Full Self-Driving (FSD) functionalities. This stands as an intriguing scenario for Cybertruck owners – enjoying cutting-edge innovations like steer-by-wire while awaiting features such as basic Autopilot, already standard even in Tesla’s most budget-friendly Model 3 sedan.
