A New Phase of Power: BMW M5 Steps into its Seventh Iteration

Following four decades of establishing the standard for high-octane sedans, the iconic BMW M5 is embarking on its seventh generation, welcoming a new epoch with its inaugural hybrid propulsion system. Showcasing a tailored version of the M Hybrid technology, the modern M5 produces an astounding 717 horsepower and 738 lb-ft of torque, propelling the vehicle to 60 mph in a mere 3.4 seconds.

This formidable power originates from an updated S63 high-revving, twin-turbo V8 motor combined with an electric motor, seamlessly matched with a ZF 8-speed, M xDrive all-wheel-drive and intelligent programming. However, it’s the hybrid system that captures our attention.

Fusion of Electrification and Performance: The M Hybrid Concept

The recent BMW M5 symbolizes a notable advance in BMW M’s quest toward electrification. Its hybrid setup draws inspiration from the powertrain present in the BMW M Hybrid V8 endurance racer, presenting a fusion of combustion and electric power. The 4.4-liter V8 motor produces 577 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque – slightly lower than the 627 hp seen in the M5 CS. However, this is complemented by an electric motor contributing up to 194 hp and 207 lb-ft. This culminates in a remarkable total output of 717 hp and 738 lb-ft, regulated by the 8-speed M Steptronic transmission and M xDrive system.

Unleashing the Power: BMW M5’s Flexible M Hybrid System

The M Hybrid system of the BMW M5 features up to five operational modes, enabling drivers to optimize both performance and efficiency. Accessing these modes is effortless through the M HYBRID button on the central console, presenting the options on the control panel. In addition to three standard driving modes, two extra modes are available as additional choices.

HYBRID Mode is the default setting, providing maximum power from both the combustion engine and electric motor. Comfort mode favors the electric motor for enhanced efficiency, while a generator function charges the battery if it runs low to maintain full power availability. Sport and Sport Plus modes ensure the combustion engine is active for peak performance.

ELECTRIC Mode is ideal for emission-free driving, with the V8 engine engaging only during hard acceleration or manual paddle shift use. eCONTROL Mode maintains or boosts battery charge through regenerative braking, preserving electric drive capacity for later usage, such as in city environments.

Opting for the optional M Drive Professional package introduces DYNAMIC and DYNAMIC PLUS Modes. These modes ensure both the combustion engine and electric motor operate together, with the cooling system optimized for track sessions. DYNAMIC mode provides a balance of high performance, while DYNAMIC PLUS unleashes full power for brief bursts on the racetrack.

Pinnacle Performance with M xDrive and Active M Differential

In all scenarios, power from the combustion engine, electric motor, or both is transmitted to the road via the M xDrive all-wheel-drive system. This system employs an electronically managed multi-plate clutch for fully adaptable power allocation between the front and rear axles, enhancing grip and performance. The transfer case is now lighter and more efficient, with improved cooling and oil level management, and increased torque handling capacity to accommodate the M Hybrid system’s power.

M xDrive’s responses can be customized through the M Setup menu. In addition to the standard 4WD mode, 4WD Sport Mode emphasizes rear-biased power distribution for dynamic handling, a hallmark of M models. Activating this setting necessitates M Dynamic Mode or deactivating DSC (Dynamic Stability Control). For a pure rear-wheel-drive feel, skilled drivers can select 2WD Mode with DSC fully off, perfect for executing controlled drifts on the track.

Working alongside M xDrive, the electronically controlled Active M Differential on the rear axle enhances traction, maneuverability, and stability. It adjusts power distributionallocation among the back wheels depending on driving conditions, enhancing active cornering by transferring power to the outer wheel and reducing understeer sans braking interference. The M xDrive and Active M Differential blend seamlessly with the central transverse dynamics management system for precise regulation of power transfer.

Solid Body Framework with M-Exclusive Bracing

The body structure of the latest M5 benefits from M-specific reinforcement components, amplifying longitudinal and torsional rigidity. At the front, a shear panel links the spring strut towers with the bulkhead, supported by custom struts. In the rear, underfloor bracing elements and extra reinforcement in the load compartment enhance strength and mounting stability.

Advanced Chassis Technology

The chassis technology of the M5 employs model-tailored kinematics and elastokinematics to deliver outstanding dynamic prowess. The double-wishbone front axle, featuring enhanced rigidity and lightweight aluminum sections, decreases unsprung weight. Revamped wheel carriers and specific kinematic configurations ensure accurate steering, neutral handling at the threshold, and consistent lateral force building.

The 5-link rear axle, incorporating innovative forged links and aluminum wheel carriers, meets the elevated dynamic requirements of the M5. Improved straight-line stability, directional consistency, and precise wheel tracking are facilitated by specific elastokinematics and rigid mountings. These components, coupled with the robust design of the rear axle subframe, boost agility and comfort.

M Servotronic Steering and Integrated Active Steering

The M Servotronic steering system blends speed-sensitive power assistance with a variable steering ratio, delivering precise response in all circumstances. Integrated Active Steering, a standard feature in the new M5, modifies the direction of the rear wheels based on velocity to enhance maneuverability, stability, and agility.

Adaptive M Suspension

The electronically controlled dampers of the Adaptive M suspension optimize road contact, diminish body roll in high-speed bends, and enhance everyday ride comfort. Sensors track body movements, road surface conditions, and steering inputs, swiftly adjusting damping forces. The driver can customize the basic damper setting through the M Setup menu.

M5 G90 426 1

Integrated Braking System

The integrated braking system in the new M5 swiftly and precisely adjusts braking power. By merging brake activation, booster, and control functions into a single module, the system guarantees instant brake pressure through an electric actuator. Advanced DSC capabilities and wheel slip restriction technology near the actuator enable precise control of acceleration on diverse surfaces, reducing DSC interventions.

Braking duties are managed by standard M Compound brakes or optional M Carbon ceramic brakes, equipped with six-piston front and single-piston rear calipers. The M Carbon ceramic brakes offer reduced weight, enhanced braking potency, and increased resistance to fading.

Sleek and Practical Design

The design of the new M5 is both impactful and utilitarian. Featuring prominent wheel arches, side skirts, and distinctive surface finishes, it sets itself apart from the 5 Series. The front showcases a contemporary BMW twin-headlight design and kidney grille, along with Adaptive LED Headlights and M Shadowline Lights. The rear end flaunts flared wheel arches, a diffuser, and M twin exhaust tailpipes in Black Chrome.

Available in an assortment of standard and BMW Individual paint options, the new M5 offers customization to cater to varied preferences. Inside, a fresh M leather steering wheel, M-specific control panel, and advanced iDrive system create a driver-centric environment.

M5 G90 502

Cutting-Edge Driver Assistance Systems

The new M5 offers a wide array of driver assistance systems, both standard and optional. Included are features such as Forward Collision Mitigation, Lane Keeping Assistant, and Speed Limit Info. Moreover, the Driving Assistant Professional package adds functionalities like Lane Keeping with Side Collision Protection and Traffic Jam Assistant.

Overall,The latest BMW M5 features state-of-the-art hybrid technology, advanced suspension systems, and a lavish yet practical design, setting it apart in the realm of high-performance luxury sedans.
