Commencing from the rear end, or, at minimum, from behind the 2024 GMC Acadia. This is the area where numerous significant changes take place. The 2024 version has a length 10 inches greater than the 2023 model, resulting in an 80% boost in storage capacity behind the third row and a third row that can now comfortably accommodate adults.

Moreover, there is concealed storage beneath the third row that adds extra capacity for storing items, along with a convenient small storage space for smaller belongings. The total cargo capacity now stands at 97.5 cubic feet.

Summary

All this is crucial as the intended consumer for the latest Acadia desires both seating and cargo capacity. Although they are more inclined toward an “in case” third row, they demand it to be practical when utilized.

The new Acadia comes with second-row captain’s chairs as standard, with no bench seating alternative. One of the notable features of the captain’s chairs is the ability to tilt and slide them even when a child seat is installed, allowing access to the third row without having to remove the child seat.

Spaciousness and Luxury

During this preview event, we only had access to the AT4 and Denali trims of the 2024 GMC Acadia, both handsomely furnished with amenities in the second and third rows. I was especially delighted to see air vents in the ceiling of the third row directly above the passenger’s face.

One of the most favorable changes for me was the comfort of the seats. General Motors has a reputation for having some of the most uncomfortable seats in the industry, typically ranging from excessively firm in the front to stiff in the rear. However, I was pleasantly surprised to find that all seats were quite comfortable–even the third row.

One more point about the third row before we move on: It can accommodate three people. I dislike it when car manufacturers do this because it often means squeezing three individuals back there tightly. However, the 2024 GMC Acadia manages hip and shoulder room decently–at least for someone of my size. This implies you can comfortably seat three children, though perhaps only two adults.

Shifting to the driver’s seat, in addition to a comfortably cushioned seat, you are treated to a 15-inch infotainment screen, elegantly designed digital gauge cluster, and (prepare for it) Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. There were concerns about GM removing CarPlay and Auto from its EVs, but they remain available in their gasoline vehicles–looking quite sleek on the large square screen.

Powertrains and Transmissions

The Acadia for 2023 had the option of a 228-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder engine and a 310-horsepower V6. However, the 2024 Acadia now exclusively features a 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. This new powertrain produces a robust 328 horsepower and 326 pound-feet of torque, providing ample power for highway acceleration and overtaking maneuvers. Nevertheless, I must confess, it did not feel as refined or quiet as the previous V6 engine.

In my opinion, the updated Acadia feels somewhat heavy and exhibits more of a rugged truck-like ride quality and handling characteristic rather than that of a typical SUV – which is not necessarily a drawback. After a few hours of driving, I never quite acclimated to its size and weight.

Being a next-generation model, the 2024 GMC Acadia showcases a significant redesign with an attractive overall appearance both inside and out. The front end takes inspiration from the brand’s Canyon pickup truck, while the upright posture, featuring more angular lines, exudes a more aggressive look.

GMC prefers to refer to its brand as “premium” rather than “luxury,” and the interior is highlighted by premium materials and finishes. From the genuine wood accents and quilted designs on the Denali model to the colored stitching on the AT4 trim, the cabin showcases meticulous attention to detail.

The new 15-inch infotainment display is a standout feature, and the way the app page, Google Maps, and Apple CarPlay occupy the screen is impressive. Notably, both CarPlay and Android Auto are supported. There has been some confusion regarding General Motors’ strategy for phone mirroring, but to simplify it, new electric vehicles do not support it, while gas-powered vehicles like the Acadia still do. Older electric vehicles from 2023 do have this capability, leading to some confusion. Therefore, some Chevy Blazer EVs and Silverado EVs come equipped with CarPlay while some do not, based on their production date.

The GMC Acadia occupies an interesting position in the market. It’s not entirely luxurious, yet it’s not purely mainstream either. Many prospective buyers may consider cross-shopping it with the mechanically similar Chevrolet Traverse, which is approximately $5000 cheaper depending on the trim level chosen. Though the GMC representatives declined to specify Acadia’s direct competitors, I would likely compare it to the Jeep Grand Cherokee L due to similar size and pricing. Additionally, both SUVs offer premium (albeit not luxury) features and are capable off-road with the appropriate enhancements.

Trim Levels

Pricing for the 2024 GMC Acadia, with the $1,395 destination charge included, is as follows:

  • GMC Acadia Elevation: $43,995 (FWD) $45,995 (AWD)
  • GMC Acadia AT4: $51,395 (AWD)
  • GMC Acadia Denali: $55,695 (FWD) $57,695 (AWD)

Summary

My initial impressions of the 2024 GMC Acadia are largely positive. While I found the cup holders and inconsistent wireless charger to be drawbacks, there are several commendable characteristics. The design and features are appealing, and I was pleasantly surprised by the comfort of the seats. The third-row seating is well-executed, and I admired the clever design of the rear cargo area. Combining these features with the Acadia’s attractive aesthetics, it seems GMC has a successful model on its hands.
