If you had “soaring VW Golf values” on your 2023 prediction list, then kudos to you. Shortly after a Mk2 GTI was sold for $87,000 on Bring a Trailer, another exceptional variant—this 97-mile Mk4 R32—achieved an impressive hammer price of $104,000 on the auction platform. That’s quite a leap from its original sub-$30,000 MSRP in 2004.
Painted in the iconic Deep Blue Pearl shade, this R32 presents itself flawlessly. It could very well be the most sparingly driven model remaining, with a notable ownership history. Originally dispatched to Jack Daniel’s Motors in New Jersey, this immaculate Golf was later transferred to another dealer. Fast forward to 2020, when the current owner, a private individual, acquired it.
The Golf R32 is renowned for its 3.2-liter VR6 engine, arguably one of VW’s best-sounding powertrains ever created. Interestingly, it recently changed hands, potentially adding more sentimental value for its new owner, @motorcar_collector. “This will have a special place next to my Clio!” they declared upon securing the winning bid.
Aside from its impressive VR6 engine, the Golf R32 features Haldex all-wheel drive, a six-speed manual gearbox, 18-inch Aristo wheels, and luxurious black leather interior with exceptional Konig seats. The original window sticker, included in the sale, attests to the near-new condition of this vehicle. If you admired one of these back in the mid-’00s when they debuted at showrooms, you’re likely experiencing the same admiration today.
You must truly adore it to drop a six-digit sum on this vehicle. The previous most expensive Golf R32 sold on Bring a Trailer achieved $62,000 in 2020 with 1,800 miles on the clock. This newer example, in a way, managed to command a higher price tag. I’d venture to say that it may hold its top spot for the foreseeable future, unless a VW aficionado has one stashed away, waiting for the perfect moment to list it.
