Early on last year, it was revealed that Maserati would be embracing electric technology in the upcoming years due to the conclusion of its engine agreement with Ferrari. However, specifics regarding this change were somewhat vague. While the Italian car manufacturer hasn’t unveiled many visual representations of their forthcoming models, they have now disclosed a more detailed timeline of their future production plans.

Based on indications from a recent press release, there are hints that a new high-performance car originating from Modena might be introduced later this year, potentially with an “electric variant,” suggesting that a traditionally powered model may also be available. In a previous instance in November, the automaker shared their own “spy images” of a mid-engined prototype supposedly teasing an upcoming model slated for a May release. Coincidentally, Maserati has teased a significant event in May where “past and future will merge to position Maserati prominently on the global stage regarding the future of transportation.” By connecting the dots, it strongly implies that Maserati is preparing for the launch of their new high-performance car in approximately three months.

As previously mentioned, Maserati’s initial electrified model will be a hybrid Ghibli sedan set to arrive sometime this year. Subsequently, a fresh, all-electric GranTurismo and GranCabrio are planned to commence production in 2021. The novel electric sports cars will be manufactured at the Mirafiori production center following an investment of $867 million. Additionally, a new SUV anticipated to fit beneath the Levante is in the works and will be assembled in Cassino after an injection of another $867 million into the production line. Work on that facility is scheduled to commence this quarter, and Maserati anticipates the arrival of the first pre-production vehicles by 2021.

The future of an esteemed Italian brand undergoing a transformation towards electric propulsion remains uncertain, but recent developments indicate that Maserati seems to possess the financial resources necessary to sustain its production of alluring coupes and sedans into the foreseeable future. Hopefully, more details will surface soon.
