Confirming the speculations, the esteemed British sports car manufacturer Lotus disclosed today prior to the 2019 Shanghai Auto Show its decision to embrace the future by developing an entirely new, fully electric hypercar; a groundbreaking move in its 71-year legacy. Named the Type 130, the renowned marque affirms that it has entered the “advanced stages” of design and will unveil the vehicle in full later this year in London, the birthplace of Lotus.

“Type 130 will represent the pinnacle of Lotus performance,” declared Lotus CEO, Phil Popham. “It signifies a turning point for our brand and serves as a testament to our capabilities and what lies ahead from Lotus.”

During the previous year, Popham discussed with Forbes that this specific Lotus model would address certain meticulous aspects that earlier cars had overlooked in pursuit of speed; he referred to them as “foundational essentials.” Prospective buyers can anticipate enhancements in user comfort and connectivity, offering an overall enhanced driving experience. Nonetheless, Lotus remains true to its fundamental principles.

The Type 130 made its debut to global press alongside Geely, its Chinese parent corporation, and their array of brands and models.

At present, Geely holds interests in six other international automotive firms, which include Lotus, Lynk & Co, Polestar, PROTON, Volvo, and the newly revealed brand, Geometry. Acquiring a majority stake in Lotus in 2017 amidst financial uncertainties, Geely subsequently revitalized the brand and established immediate objectives for the manufacturer to meet in order to resonate more strongly with contemporary supercar enthusiasts.

Regrettably, further details about the Type 130 are yet to be disclosed, as the automaker has not announced a public release date. What is clear, however, is that this model signifies Lotus’ first ground-up new car creation since 2008, and the initial all-electric Lotus to be marketed under the brand. Given the brand’s storied racing legacy, the future looks promising for Lotus.
