Rapidly Advancing Production of Compact Hummer EV Under Consideration by GMC

According to Bloomberg sources, GM has moved forward with conceptualizing a smaller, electric Hummer EV model that could see the light of production soon. Executives are reportedly expediting the project, as revealed by individuals familiar with the automaker’s strategies.

A representative from GMC chose not to comment on the matter when approached by The Drive.

Currently, GMC is providing the Hummer EV pickup truck in limited quantities, with plans to introduce a Hummer EV SUV next year. The specifics regarding the hypothetical smaller Hummer EV, such as its foundation and relative size compared to the hefty 9,000-pound Hummer EV currently available for purchase, remain undisclosed.

GM has recently introduced several electric SUVs and trucks, including the Cadillac Lyriq, Chevrolet Blazer EV, Equinox EV, and Silverado EV. The Bloomberg report suggests that a smaller Hummer EV could compete directly with Rivian’s R1T truck, which is smaller than the Ford F-150 Lightning and Silverado EV. The development of GMC’s Sierra EV is also underway, but it remains uncertain whether a prospective Hummer EV would be comparable in size or smaller to prevent cannibalization of sales.

Historically, a range of Hummer vehicles has existed. GM acquired the brand in the late 1990s from AM General, promoting the rugged SUVs as a masculine alternative to other options. The civilian H1 attracted attention from celebrities and enthusiasts, the H2 captivated buyers with its bold appearance and robust construction. The H2 later led to a pickup model, and GM introduced a smaller H3—both SUV and pickup—before discontinuing the brand in 2010. While Hummer was admired for its bold design, the brand came to symbolize excessive consumption during a period of economic downturn.

In 2020, GMC resurrected Hummer as a sub-brand and launched the Hummer EV.
