The 2023 Jeep Compass, Stellantis’ compact crossover, will introduce a new powertrain to start off the upcoming year. The outdated 2.4-liter “Tigershark” four-cylinder is being replaced by a fresh 2.0-liter turbo-four. While this might seem like a step down initially, delving into the specifics reveals that the smaller, new engine actually delivers more power and torque. Car and Driver uncovered details about the new engine in filings with federal authorities, indicating that it will produce nearly 100 horsepower more than its predecessor.

The previous Tigershark naturally aspirated four-cylinder from Jeep only yielded 177 horsepower and 172 pound-feet of torque. These figures fall short of the power outputs of more contemporary competitor engines, such as Ford’s Ecoboost (250 horsepower) and Chevy’s 2.0-liter turbo-four (228 horsepower). In contrast, this new Compass engine boasts 270 horsepower and 295 pound-feet, and will be matched with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Based on EPA documents, it appears that the front-wheel drive Compass is being discontinued, with all-wheel drive becoming standard.

The new engine, which is also set to power the Dodge Hornet, was initially intended for the Alfa Romeo Tonale before the latter switched to a plug-in hybrid powertrain. It remains uncertain if Jeep and Dodge will eventually adopt the Tonale’s more potent, efficient PHEV system offering 30 miles of electric range.

The inclusion of the new turbo-four engine will raise the starting price of the 2023 Compass to $31,590, up from the 2022 all-wheel drive Compass’ $30,380, which seems justifiable considering the substantial power boost.

We have contacted Stellantis to inquire about any other modifications that may be introduced to the 2023 Compass alongside the new engine, and will provide updates once additional information is obtained. However, since the Compass already underwent a facelift for the 2022 model year, it is unlikely that there will be significant additional changes for the following year.
