The sequence of events regarding the Subaru Baja compact truck is a mystery. Was it the demand for the return of the Subaru Baja that sparked its creation? The answer to that will forever elude us. What is certain is that Atlantic Subaru near Boston possesses one of the most pristine models left—and they’re seeking $59,800 for it.

Clearly, Subaru demonstrated foresight with the Baja and its predecessor, the Brat. Manufactured from 2002 to 2007, the Baja was essentially an Outback with a cargo bed and a compact 3.5-foot bed, extendable to 5 feet when lower the tailgate. (Initial models had the rear license plate mounted on the tailgate, making it technically illegal to drive with the tailgate open due to obstructing the rear plate.)

Initially equipped with a modest 165-horsepower flat-four engine, the Baja became more exciting in its later years with a turbocharged EJ engine boosting output to 230 hp and 235 pound-feet of torque.

The Baja wasn’t tailored for traditional truck enthusiasts. Its load capacity in the short bed was just over 1,000 pounds, and it could tow up to 2,400 pounds, falling short of many competitors on the market.

When it debuted in 2002 for the 2003 model year, the Subaru Baja had a starting price of $21,995 (excluding destination charges). A fully-loaded model had a price tag of under $27,000 at launch. By 2006, the base model cost $22,495, with the turbo version commanding an additional $2,100.

Acquired from Bring a Trailer earlier this year for $41,000, excluding charges, the Baja was originally meant for the dealership owner’s residence to replace a 350,000-mile Baja that has been the primary family vehicle. Regrettably, the standard transmission became tedious during brief drives in the Boston neighborhood where the dealership is situated, prompting the owner to market the vehicle.

It has been available for purchase since March, and Weglarz mentioned it serves as a reminder to potential buyers and current owners of what a Subaru with an accessible cargo bed looked like.

If Subaru ever decides to reintroduce the Baja model, it is improbable that they will price a standard model close to $60,000. However, if you are unwilling to wait for those possibilities, there are alternatives available.
