The announcement from Ford North America president Kumar Galhotra on Wednesday hinted at a forthcoming electric crossover from Lincoln, potentially making its debut in 2020.

This upcoming vehicle will be based on a specialized electric vehicle (EV) platform that will initially support Ford’s electric crossover, inspired by the “Mustang” theme and speculated to be dubbed the “Mach E.” Ford has promised to unveil this model in 2020, though the timeline for its Lincoln variant—which will have distinct styling—remains ambiguous.

“Creating aesthetically pleasing vehicles can be achieved through various approaches,” Galhotra stated during an event organized by Automotive News. “The utilization of BEV technology allows us the flexibility to shape the vehicle precisely as desired. We aspire to develop sophisticated Lincoln BEVs.”

Galhotra further added, “There’s a greater degree of adaptability. The focus is not solely on being assertive. Instead, it involves leveraging all available technological elements to embody the core essence of the Lincoln brand, characterized by subtle, refined luxury.”

Given the shared platform and probable drivetrain components, the manufacturer projects that both models will deliver equivalent range, efficiency, and performance. Ford estimates a range of 300 miles for the vehicle, likely using EPA testing procedures, which represent the U.S.’s primary standard and are the most conservative among the three most widely adopted protocols.

Even though Lincoln is not primarily known for performance-centric offerings, Ford CEO Jim Hackett’s assertion that the model is “a rocket ship” suggests that the Lincoln variant should also possess impressive acceleration.

On Tuesday, Ford confirmed it will explore potential collaboration with its new commercial vehicle partner, Volkswagen, for developing electric vehicles. Nevertheless, it clarified to The Drive that the Mustang-inspired crossover has reached an advanced stage of development independently without influence from the Volkswagen partnership.
