Electric cars are making their mark in various markets, from daily commuter vehicles to heavy-duty work machines. Mercedes-Benz has now brought the eSprinter, previously available abroad, to North American customers for the 2024 model year.

The eSprinter retains the iconic design of the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter but is now driven by an electric battery system. With a starting price of $74,181, which includes a $2,295 destination fee, the eSprinter comes equipped with a 113 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery tailored for North American consumers. Opting for LFP technology eliminates concerns about cobalt or nickel sourcing and offers enhanced longevity suitable for commercial use.

Of particular interest is the vehicle’s estimated range of 249 miles, as claimed by Mercedes. While this may be adequate for daily trips, it may not meet the demands of businesses with longer routes or those hesitant about frequent recharging. Notably, the range estimation is based on Europe’s generous WLTP testing cycle rather than the typically more conservative EPA rating. Considering its electric nature and regenerative braking, the eSprinter is best suited for urban routes with frequent stops rather than lengthy rural deliveries.

Buyers have the option to select between two power configurations: 134 hp or 201 hp from a single electric motor, both offering up to 295 lb.-ft of torque. Mercedes specifically mentions that the motor can sustain this torque for “at least 30 seconds,” hinting at possible thermal limitations beyond that timeframe. The higher-power motor is available at a higher cost, starting at $77,611 compared to $74,181 for the lower-power version.

The eSprinter standardly offers AC charging at 9.6 kW and DC fast charging up to 50 kW. An optional upgrade to 115 kW charging enables the battery to reach 80% capacity from 10% in just over 40 minutes. This rapid charging option would be highly desirable for businesses aiming to keep their fleet operational as much as possible.
