The existence of rugged-ready wagons, particularly those laden with luxury, offers a delightful contradiction. Initial impressions may deem them as typical family wagons ferrying children to school, yet they possess the capability to conquer off-road paths that would pose a challenge to most crossover vehicles. The 2024 edition of the Mercedes E-Class All-Terrain serves as the latest entrant to this category and amalgamates all the opulence of the standard E-Class within a robust combat-ready framework.

Derived from the newest iteration of the E-Class wagon, the 2024 All-Terrain possesses a sense of familiarity in appearance. What sets it apart from the regular wagon are its heightened ride stature, charcoal-colored fender flares, and distinctive bumpers. While the standard wagon already boasted an appealing design, the All-Terrain variation elevates it further, exuding a whimsical charm as a luxurious wagon equipped for off-road adventures.

Similar to its predecessor, the new Mercedes E-Class All-Terrain will be available in the United States market. However, it will exclusively offer the E450 model variant ‘Stateside, as the standard wagon will continue to be prevalent east of the Atlantic.

Upon arrival at U.S. dealerships in 2024, the E-Class All-Terrain will be presented solely in the E450 configuration. This entails a 3.0-liter twin-turbo inline-six engine, integrated with a mild-hybrid system, generating a total output of 375 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. The sole transmission choice will be a nine-speed automatic, complemented by the standard 4Matic all-wheel drive. Mercedes claims a 0-60 mph acceleration in 4.6 seconds, a feat accomplished on solid ground. It would be intriguing to witness its performance on unpaved roads.

Including air suspension as a standard feature (optional on the sedan), the E-Class All-Terrain maintains consistent ground clearance regardless of the vehicle load. However, it adjusts by 0.6 inches at 75 mph in its comfort mode, enhancing aerodynamics and high-speed maneuverability. The default wheel size is 18 inches, but options for 19-inch and 20-inch wheels are also available.

Within the E-Class All-Terrain’s interior, one discovers a luxurious cabin mirroring that of the sedan, equipped with the advanced MBUX infotainment system. A novel inclusion is the off-road screen that activates upon switching to the “Off-Road” setting, providing a comprehensive 360-degree view of the vehicle’s surroundings. Additionally, it features a transparent hood function, aiding the driver in avoiding potentially hazardous obstacles that could harm the vehicle’s aesthetic appeal.

Regarding practicality, the E-Class All-Terrain aligns closely with the standard E-Class wagon, offering 21.7 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats upright and 64.6 cubic feet with the rear seats folded down. Rear passengers benefit from nearly an inch of additional legroom and elbow room compared to the sedan, and the rear seats adopt a 40:20:40 split configuration.

Whilst Mercedes has yet to disclose the price for the E-Class All-Terrain, anticipation suggests it may surpass the outgoing model’s $72,400 price tag. The target demographic for this opulent off-road combat vehicle remains a mystery, but should they be identified, camaraderie could potentially ensue.
