Hyundai is enhancing the trade-specific edition of its distinctive Staria van with a fresh elite trim level. The South Korean car manufacturer has officially launched the 2023 Hyundai Staria Load Premium, aiming to provide drivers with an elevated experience compared to the more basic trims, while also addressing some overall deficiencies.

Let’s be clear—the moniker “Premium” does not signify that the latest iteration of the Staria Load is packed with all the features of the standard space-themed passenger version of the Staria. Instead, it caters more towards commercial use by contractors and similar professionals. Think of it as the basic Ford Maverick XL frequently seen at auto parts stores or the Ford F-150 Lightning Pro commonly found at construction sites. Paints a picture, doesn’t it?

Visually, observers may spot the new LED headlights, light bar, and taillights resembling those on the Ioniq, now adorning the Staria. Furthermore, the Premium edition boasts fresh 17-inch wheels and a power-operated liftgate. Unfortunately, the dual-swing doors found on lower trims won’t be available for the Premium variant. However, the real luxuries lie within the van.

Primarily, the vehicle comes equipped with a pair of large 10.25-inch displays for the occupants. One replaces the standard 8-inch infotainment screen, with the other serving as the gauge cluster. Additionally, the van features automatic climate control, a blind-spot view monitor, high beam assist, and a push-start button with proximity key.

No changes have been made under the hood. The Staria Load Premium retains the same 2.2-liter turbocharged diesel four-cylinder engine as its siblings. It remains paired with the familiar eight-speed automatic transmission that sends power solely to the front wheels.

The positive news is that drivers at the helm of these appliance-like vehicles can savor a touch of modernity, all at a reasonable price point. The 2023 Staria Load Premium is priced at a fairly accessible $34,889 ($51,240 AUD), in contrast to the base two-seater version at $31,145 ($45,740 AUD). Opting for the five-seater variant will require investing in the non-Premium “Crew Van” trim priced at $33,787 ($49,640 AUD).

On the downside, despite being the second best-selling van in Australia, the Staria remains unavailable in the U.S. in any form. Nonetheless, there’s some satisfaction in living vicariously through others. Witnessing different markets relish these special base-model trims, albeit with a hint of modern flair, brings a touch of delight to my minimalist car enthusiast heart.
