The Fiat Panda 4×4 stands out as one of the most prominent urban vehicles available, especially in Europe. This small, boxy car boasts a straightforward mechanical design and was among the first cars ever to feature an engine mounted sideways that powers all four wheels. It has achieved iconic status in its native Italy, leading Italian publication Car&Vintage to commission the exciting transformation of a few fortunate Pandas into electric vehicles to mark the outlet’s milestone of reaching half a million followers on Instagram.
Emerging from the extensive production of Panda cars since 1980, Pandina Jones—taking inspiration from everyone’s beloved adventurous archaeologist—received a modern makeover in the 21st century by Garage Italia, a restoration hub located in Milan renowned for refurbishing various vintage vehicles, particularly Fiats. Rather than opting for a traditional restoration, the shop adopted an eco-friendly approach by installing an electric powertrain to replace the original 48-horsepower 965cc engine.

Even with these changes, don’t expect this Panda to achieve breakneck speeds; the modest battery and undisclosed electric motor are reported to reach a maximum speed of about 72 mph. Charging Pandina Jones fully will take between three to eight hours. With a fully charged battery, the vehicle can travel a moderate 62 miles, which should be sufficient for a leisurely drive around a charming Italian town, staying true to Fiat’s original vision.
Observers will notice that the car proudly retains its original “4×4” badging. While there’s only one electric motor powering this compact car, Garage Italia decided to uphold the factory-fitted Steyr drivetrain, ensuring all four wheels remain driven. Should this adventurous vehicle veer off the conventional path, rest assured that it’s capable of handling various terrains, even though it may not excel in off-grid performance.

The upgrade includes various off-road inspired elements such as front and rear brush guards, vintage Carello spotlights, and sturdy tires from either BFGoodrich or Kormoran.
Following a complete refurbishment with components sourced from donors, Garage Italia prepared the vehicle ex novo and finished it in a striking green reminiscent of pistachio, formulated in collaboration with automotive paint manufacturer BASF. The interior was meticulously adorned in a vibrant orange Alcantara, harmonizing with the exterior accents of the Panda.
Signifying the superior craftsmanship, this project is not Garage Italia’s inaugural venture. The automotive specialists based in Milan have been involved in a series of electric restomods as part of their “Icon-e” initiative, aiming to revive the spirit of iconic cars, a mission that’s indeed commendable.
Further restoration projects by the establishment encompass classic local favorites and cultural symbols like the Fiat 600 Multipla and 500 Jolly. Garage Italia plans to create a total of five cleverly named electric Panda 4x4s, with this serving as just one example.
