The Alfa Romeo family is expanding, both in size and metaphorically. In addition to an in-demand supercar and a lineup of electric vehicles in the pipeline, the Italian automaker is now committed to delivering an overdue SUV. This week, during an interview with Auto Express, Alfa Romeo CEO Jean-Philippe Imparato announced plans to introduce a luxurious mid- to full-size sedan, followed by an all-electric SUV set to compete with models like the BMW iX, Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV, and Audi Q8 E-Tron

“Beginning in 2026, we will venture into larger segments. In 2027, I will launch an E-segment vehicle ideal for North America and Europe,” Imparato revealed in the interview with Auto Express. “We may expand to the Chinese market as well, with a planned introduction in 2028.”

The forthcoming sizable SUV will complement the new electric Giulia sedan and Stelvio SUV, but it is improbable that all four will share the same platform. Reports suggest that the large Alfa SUV will utilize the STLA Large framework from parent company Stellantis, which recently confirmed the sourcing of the framework from the assembly plant in Cassino, Italy. This decision aligns with the longstanding tradition of producing Alfa Romeos exclusively in Italy.

Despite the exclusive Italian production, the STLA Large platform may not be limited to Italy. Stellantis disclosed that the platform will also be utilized at its facility in Windsor, Ontario, currently responsible for manufacturing the remaining Dodge Challengers, Chargers, and Chrysler 300s. The unibody construction of the STLA Large frame is expected to house batteries offering a range of up to 500 miles. It is probable that several upcoming Stellantis vehicles, including the Jeep Grand Cherokee, a three-row Dodge SUV, and the upcoming Alfa Romeo electric SUV with three rows, will adopt this platform.

Imparato aims to achieve around 435 miles of range for the electric sedan, suggesting the SUV may have slightly less. Moreover, it will feature an 800-volt architecture capable of charging the batteries to 80% in less than 20 minutes.
