In the 1980s, the Buick Regal, a common American vehicle, gained fame through its use of turbocharging technology. Models like the sporty Grand National and the ferocious GNX set the stage for today’s V6-powered, turbocharged cars. However, sometimes simplicity is key, as highlighted by Enrique Ojeda, the individual behind the project_hellnational Instagram account.

Ojeda claims to have constructed the sole Hellcat-swapped Buick Grand National globally, replacing the turbo V6 with the classic American duo: a large V8 engine equipped with a supercharger. Over a year, he has meticulously documented this project on his Instagram and YouTube.

According to Ojeda, the Hellcat V8 engine and eight-speed gearbox were salvaged from a wrecked 2016 Charger. The Grand National was a decrepit shell that underwent extensive repairs to restore its decaying state. Numerous modifications, including bespoke headers and engine mounts, were necessary for the engine integration. Enhancements to the braking system were completed, with Wilwood components at the front and Tesla parts at the rear—quite an unusual choice. Furthermore, the car’s suspension received upgrades, featuring new control arms from CPP and Viking coilovers.

Although the project is still ongoing, a preview of its final appearance has been showcased through renders. The vehicle is currently operational, with pending aesthetic alterations to transform it into a GNX-inspired Regal. Once completed, this car is set to become one of the swiftest and most streetable Grand Nationals in existence.
