The Mitsubishi Mustang badge has been in a state of dormancy for quite some time, with its last production dating back to 2013 before being discontinued by the Japanese vehicle manufacturer. The Mustang is set to make a comeback in 2023, this time being manufactured on a Ford platform, as per the report by Automotive News Europe.

Specifics are limited at this stage, but a sneak peek image unveiled by the corporation indicates that the car shares a considerable resemblance to the Ford Mustang, with numerous panels showing close similarities or exact matches to the American vehicle. Produced in Ford’s facilities in Turkey and Slovenia, it is expected that the Mustang will be put together on the same production lines due to its striking similarity to the Mustang. Notable alterations seem to be centered around the front grille, implying that the modifications may be confined to a rebranding endeavor along with some adjustments around the headlights.

The vehicle showcases a “Hybrid EV” emblem, indicating multiple powertrain choices for the upcoming model. Mitsubishi has hinted that a hybrid option is in the pipeline, although no further specifics have been disclosed. The Ford Mustang is presented with petrol engines in addition to the corporation’s hybrid “E-Tech” mechanism. The hybrid variant includes a 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine matched with dual electric motors providing a collective output of 145 hp, boasting fuel efficiency surpassing 60mpg. It’s probable that the Mustang’s engine selections would be carried over to the Mitsubishi offering.

The aspiration is for the Mustang to aid Mitsubishi in re-establishing its foothold in Europe. Through a statement released on Tuesday, Mitsubishi intimated as such, declaring “The new model will substantially broaden Mitsubishi Motors’ market reach in key European sectors.” This marks a significant shift in the company’s strategy, especially after Mitsubishi declared its retreat from the European market in 2020.

Considering that the Ford Mustang is not retailed in the US, it seems improbable for the Mustang to make its way to America, as it would involve costs for adaptation to conform with federal regulations. The Drive has attempted to reach out to Mitsubishi, who conveyed that there are presently no intentions to introduce the Mustang to the US market.

Having an economical compact automobile available will be a crucial advantage for Mitsubishi. In this iteration, the Mustang benefits from minimal development expenses as it shares a close relationship with the Ford Mustang. Only time will reveal if the Mustang can aid in revitalizing Mitsubishi’s fortunes, which have been diminishing as of late.
