Tesla Model Y Drags Semi Trailer Until It Reaches Limit, Driver Leaves the Scene

For those active on TikTok, chances are you’ve come across the viral video featuring the Tesla Model Y hauling a semi-trailer through town. Over a million viewers have watched the original footage posted recently, and as the night progressed, the narrative unfolded further. I conversed with the individuals tasked with recovering the electric vehicle (EV) after it was deserted by its operator near a petrol station, and the scenario became increasingly chaotic.

The initial sighting of the Tesla occurred close to a Bass Pro Shops outlet in Harlingen, Texas, complete with temporary tags and towing a trailer. Capital Towing received instructions from the Texas Department of Public Safety to relocate the Tesla from a Valero station near Palm Valley. They dispatched a light-duty truck to haul the EV away, while a heavy-duty unit was sent to retrieve the trailer. Ultimately, both units ended up being impounded.

“It seemed to be connected with what seemed like a UPS dolly,” shared an individual from Capital Towing during our conversation. “The driver was navigating the area in that manner, and the striking aspect was the absence of a lighting setup.”

While Tesla does provide an optional towing package for the Model Y, it seems this particular unit was outfitted with it. Nevertheless, the trailer’s connector did not seem to match the seven-pin outlet of the car. This mismatch raised concerns, especially during nighttime. Although the trailer was reportedly empty, according to Capital Towing, it still amounted to around 10,000 pounds hitched to the crossover, which was considerably smaller than the massive 53-footer.

As per available information, no accidents were reported, and the driver had already exited the scene by the time Capital Towing arrived. Simply put, they abandoned the vehicle. Following its abandonment, numerous videos featuring the Tesla and trailer surfaced on TikTok, though none seemed to capture the driver up close, at least not yet.

Until the driver is identified and apprehended, both the Tesla and the trailer will remain in the impound lot. It’s probable that they will be put up for auction, considering it’s highly unlikely that anyone would volunteer to redeem them. It’s conceivable that either item could be purchased at a bargain, but it’s important to note that the Model Y likely sustained damage from the ordeal. The rear hatch appears to be already damaged, and the extent of the underlying issues remains uncertain.
