The 2023 Goodwood Festival of Speed faced a cancellation of activities on Saturday due to hazardous weather conditions. However, the final moments of Friday delivered thrilling racing experiences. The heavy rain added an extra layer of challenge to the already demanding Goodwood hill climb, testing the skills of some of the world’s top drivers. Among them, renowned rally driver and fearless automotive enthusiast Travis Pastrana stood out by embracing the challenging conditions with enthusiasm.
Prior to his runs, I had a conversation with Pastrana who appeared excited to unleash the power of his 850-horsepower Subaru GL Familiy Huckster on the rain-soaked tarmac.

“Several of the other drivers at this event prefer finding the optimal racing line and aim for a clean ascent up the hill. However, that’s not my style. I simply enjoy getting sideways,” expressed Pastrana. “Moreover, this [Subaru] boasts exceptional traction thanks to its aero package and all-wheel drive, enabling it to handle any track orientation effectively.”

The Goodwood Road & Racing YouTube channel shared the aforementioned video of Pastrana conquering the hill in challenging wet conditions.

Pastrana’s exceptional vehicle handling skills allowed him to achieve what many struggle with at Goodwood: providing entertainment for the spectators while setting impressive lap times. Typically, drivers have to choose one over the other. However, Pastrana and his Subaru racing wagon showcased an exceptional balance, achieving the second-quickest time while delivering spectacular drifting displays for the fans.

“The rear wing provides significant added stopping power during braking,” Pastrana added. “While it’s primarily configured to stabilize the car during large jumps, we tuned it to ensure the rear end remains grounded in these circumstances.”

The action is set to resume on Sunday morning at the iconic driveway of the Duke of Richmond, offering Pastrana, Sebastian Vettel, Mick Schumacher, Emerson Fittipaldi, and countless others another opportunity to captivate the audience.
