It’s hard to argue with the success that BMW M GmbH has had in extending its product line into the mainstream of the market. The sub-brand had stellar financial year in 2023, achieving record-breaking results with over 200,000 vehicles delivered globally, marking a huge milestone for the company. That’s a 14.3% increase in sales compared to 2022 and the first time has eclipsed the 200k mark.

We’ve spoken about the dilution of the brand in the past but sales and revenue are hard to argue with and BMW M is increasingly becoming a material part of BMW’s financial health.

The USA was the top market for BMW M GmbH cars in 2023, followed by Germany and the UK. Sylvia Neubauer, Vice President Customer, Brand, Sales at BMW M GmbH, said, “With the historic record of more than 200,000 vehicles delivered, we have reached a milestone in the 2023 financial year. The impressive demand is a great confirmation that we are hitting the nerve of the times with our diverse product portfolio.”

The BMW i4 M50, the first all-electric performance model, continued to be a hit in 2023. M also launched the BMW i5 M60 xDrive Sedan and the BMW i7 M70 xDrive, expanding their range of all-electric performance vehicles.

“The financial year 2023 was characterized both by our highly successful portfolio of highly emotional combustion engine vehicles and by our ongoing electrification offensive with two further all-electric performance models and our first electrified high-performance car, the BMW XM,” says Franciscus van Meel, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW M GmbH. “Not least the ongoing success of the BMW i4 M50 confirms that we are on the right track to further advance the electrification of our product portfolio and to combine sustainable drive technologies with an emotionally powerful driving experience.”

In 2023, three new high-performance models contributed to the increase in sales: the second generation of the BMW M2, the BMW XM with M HYBRID system, and the BMW M3 CS special model.

The BMW M3 Sedan was the world’s best-selling high-performance sports car in 2023, followed by the BMW M4 Coupé.

Looking ahead to 2024, BMW M GmbH plans to refresh popular models like the BMW M3, M4, and M2 with more power, colors and new options. Also new for 2024 will be the BMW M4 CS which follows in the footsteps of the excellent M3 CS (which we recently drove and loved). However the big news will come in June when M takes the wraps off of the BMW M5 and then the M5 Touring.

Finally BMW M GmbH is also gearing up for a historic racing comeback at Le Mans in 2024 after 25 years, showcasing the BMW M Hybrid V8 in the form of the 20th BMW Art Car, designed by Julie Mehretu
