The Transit has been a commercial vehicle staple in markets outside North America since the mid-1960s. It didn’t come to the U.S. until 2014 when it replaced the brand’s long-running Econoline series of vans. With a variety of chassis and roof configurations, the Transit was a direct competitor to the Dodge (now Mercedes-Benz) Sprinter series. Ford’s offering was an instant hit with businesses and governments. More than 1.2 million have been built since 2014, and the company claims 99 percent are still on the road today.

The all-electric E-Transit debuted in 2022, with Ford claiming it to be the, “electric van of choice in America, Canada and Europe” according to a press release. The company says the E-Transit has saved its owners more than 3 million gallons of gas and reduced CO2 output by more than more than 25 million kilograms.

For 2024, the E-Transit sees a boost in battery capacity to 89 kWh from 68. On the low-roof Cargo Van configuration, this translates into an estimated driving range of 159 miles, up from the 126 of the outgoing version. Ford also says the E-Transit is now more capable of working in high-power-demand transportation industries such as refrigerated delivery. Power output for the ’24 van is unchanged at 266 horsepower and 317 pound-feet of torque.

Also new are dual onboard chargers that support a peak of 176 kilowatts. When connected to a DC fast charger with 180 kilowatt or greater capacity, the 2024 E-Transit should be able to gain up to 67 miles of range in 15 minutes. The E-Transit will be compatible with Tesla’s enhanced supercharging network via an adapter that buyers can get for free through June 30, 2024 (after this period, the adapter will cost $230). A Ford Pro Series 2 80-amp base station will be available that is designed to charge a 2024 E-Transit from 0 to 100 percent in slightly more than 6 hours. Ford Pro Power Onboard also returns, which provides up to 2.4 kilowatts of power to plug in laptops, tools, or other equipment at a jobsite.

Orders for the 2024 Ford E-Transit will open later this spring with a starting MSRP of $51,095 plus destination. Some versions may also qualify for a Commercial Clean Vehicle Tax Credit worth up to $7,500.

 CG Says:

More range and charging options for EVs are always good, especially on commercial models that will be put through the ringer every day. We’re curious to see how these vehicles will handle refrigerated duty since that takes a lot of power. We imagine it would only be practical for companies who operate in a limited radius like florists or bakeries.
