The 2025 BMW 4 Series – Updated Engines with a New Mild Hybrid System

Powertrains in the 2025 M440i models feature 48V mild hybrid technology for sharper power delivery and greater efficiency. The B58B30M2 3-liter inline 6-cylinder engines provide a maximum system output of 386 hp leveraging a new 48V mild hybrid system. The engine’s output is actually down to slightly to 375 hp. However the hybrid system deploys its 11-hp for long enough that it’s technically included in the “total system output” of the powertrain.

Why the change? BMW has moved to a KSG (crankshaft starter generator) version of the MHEV (48V mild hybrid) system in this new version of the B58. This allows for the system to apply power for more than 10 seconds where the older SGR (starter generator belt) based MHEV system does not. In other words this new B58 has 375 hp from the ICE + 11 hp from the MHVE = 386 hp.

The B48B20O2 2-liter inline 4-cylinder engine in the 2025 430i benefits from an older version of the 48V mild hybrid technology and the Miller cycle combustion process, producing 255 hp.

The new BMW 4 Series will begin production in March of 2024.
