In case you have stayed in Japan for a long period, you will value a bright spring day. This specific spring day was further enhanced with a Hachiroku drift occasion at Mobara Circuit.

Accompany me as I geek out on 86-exclusive chaos.

For those unfamiliar, Mobara Circuit is a versatile motorsports complex located just across Tokyo Bay in Mobara City, Chiba. Although most are aware of Mobara for its numerous drift and time attack contests, the site also accommodates motorcycle and go-kart track sessions, with many held on the relatively unknown short circuit beside the main track.

Having participated in various events at Mobara Circuit and possessing considerable familiarity with typical AE86 power levels, I was excited to witness how these vehicles managed the ‘Gallery’ turn – a large sweeping left curve onto the straight stretch. Normally, this section serves as the primary evaluation area in D1 Divisional and similar grassroots contests. It’s challenging to convey via camera the extent of elevation change experienced at this segment of the circuit for someone who hasn’t physically been to Mobara.

While wandering around the paddock, there was an abundance of AE86s. Predictably, Team Mouse and Major Force were well represented, showcasing some of the finest and most identifiable vehicles. It would be delusional to assume that they would skip such an event.

  • A pal of mine, Marcello, competed in the event with his Levin built by Garage Matsuyama for the final time before heading back to Australia. Despite Marcello and Club 4AGE pushing hard throughout the day, the fun was cut short for my Australian friend as the high-revving engine of his Levin snapped its timing belt, leading to some valve and piston interaction. Not an ideal situation.

However, the ironic aspect of drifting emerged. Despite the major setback, everyone remained cheerful and jovial. Personally, I doubt I could maintain the same composure if faced with a similar predicament.

It is clear to affirm that this chassis, more than 40 years old, remains a pivotal presence in motorsport, particularly within the realm of drifting in Japan.
