It’s quite uncommon to see a car with an engine that is significantly smaller than its factory-installed counterpart. Thus, the sight of an Audi R8 race car equipped with a four-cylinder engine from a Volkswagen Golf GTI brings many laughs.
This custom R8 was assembled by Keith Murray at Dialynx Performance in England. Designed specifically for hill climbing, the vehicle utilizes a tweaked 2.0-liter inline-four engine from a Mk3 VW Golf GTI, featuring a Garrett HTA turbocharger that produces 30 PSI. While this engine is less than half the size of the original R8’s 4.2-liter V8, which generates 420 horsepower, it manages to deliver a remarkable 650 horsepower when powered by race fuel.
This engine is linked to a six-speed sequential transmission and a limited-slip differential. Combined with an ultra-lightweight chassis weighing just 2,107 pounds, this configuration is expected to create a highly agile hill climb vehicle.
