As we move into another year, the manual transmission continues to fade away. Among the latest losses are the VW Golf GTI and Golf R, which will now be available exclusively with automatic transmissions. Interestingly, the less popular sedan variant, the 2025 VW Jetta GLI, will still offer a manual option, making it one of the most affordable performance cars with a manual transmission in the U.S.
The 2025 Jetta GLI receives a mid-cycle refresh across all trims, showcasing updated front and rear designs, a new light bar integrated into the grille, and available redesigned 18-inch black wheels. Standard features now include automatic climate control and an eight-inch infotainment screen. However, the main highlight for enthusiasts is the continuation of the manual gearbox in 2025.
The 2025 GLI continues to offer a six-speed manual transmission alongside a seven-speed DSG automatic. Both options are paired with a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 228 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque, sent to the front wheels through a limited-slip differential. The front features a strut suspension, while the rear utilizes a multi-link setup, with VW’s adaptive damping system implemented at all corners. Enhanced braking systems and a sporty exhaust system are also key features of the GLI.
Inside, the GLI boasts perforated Vienna leather upholstery available in red, black, or grey, complete with red contrast stitching. The Autobahn trim upgrades include a heated steering wheel, although it unfortunately retains touch controls—seemingly, we’ll have to wait for future models to return to traditional buttons.
The 2025 Volkswagen Jetta GLI is slated to arrive at U.S. dealerships in the third quarter. While pricing details are still under wraps, VW claims that the base Jetta models will see a price decrease. It is hoped that the GLI will follow suit, especially as it becomes increasingly attractive compared to its competitors who are exiting the market.
