Mercedes-AMG is renowned for its powerful, thrill-inducing V8s—engines that give the impression they are eager to shred the rear tires. Such wild behavior has been a defining characteristic of AMGs, even in the brand’s most functional models like the GLC63 SUV. However, the new 2025 Mercedes-AMG GLC63 E Performance is opting to swap its remarkable 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 for a hybrid four-cylinder configuration, akin to the C63 super sedan.

Whether you approve or not, the highly-anticipated family-friendly carrier boasts a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine at the front, a nine-speed automatic transmission in the middle, and an electric motor positioned on the rear axle. Consequently, all four wheels are propelled with a rear-biased 4Matic system evenly distributing the power output.

Thankfully, the hybrid AMG is nothing akin to your aunt’s Prius. It boasts a staggering 671 horsepower and 752 pound-feet of combined torque, marking an increase of 168 hp and 236 lb-ft over its predecessor powered by a V8. Mercedes asserts a zero-to-60 mph acceleration time of 3.4 seconds, outstripping the previous model by two-tenths of a second.

There is also a lower-tier AMG variant: The 2024 Mercedes-AMG GLC43, which features a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine. However, the smaller AMG does not incorporate the GLC63’s electric motor at the rear axle, opting instead for a 48-volt mild-hybrid system with a belt-driven starter generator contributing an additional 13 horsepower. The total power output stands at 416 horsepower and 369 pound-feet, representing a 31 horsepower increase over the previous V6 model.
