Ahead of its debut in June as a sedan and later in hatchback form this summer, Honda has unveiled additional details about its upcoming lineup of Civic hybrids.
The hybrid variant of the Civic is positioned to be the most fuel-efficient model in the lineup while also standing out as one of the more athletic and potent models among the mainstream Civic range, rivaling even the traditionally spirited Si variant. This iteration will be equipped with a 2.0-liter inline-4 engine, larger than previous Civic hybrid powertrains or the Insight hybrid sedan it succeeds. Honda highlights that the hybrid model will generate 232 lb-ft of torque, making it the most forceful non-Type R Civic to date. While the exact horsepower rating remains undisclosed, it can be compared to the Type R which boasts 315 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque. Honda has designed the two-motor hybrid system to simulate gear shifts while operating the engine.
The hybrid system by Honda, as employed in the CR-V Hybrid and Accord Hybrid, functions primarily as a series hybrid during acceleration, with the gasoline engine acting as a generator. It transitions to a parallel hybrid mode during specific cruising conditions and light acceleration. The vehicle will feature four levels of regenerative braking accessible through steering-wheel paddles.
Direct competitors to the Civic Hybrid include the Toyota Corolla Hybrid and Hyundai Elantra Hybrid.
Replacing the discontinued Insight, the Honda Civic hybrid is positioned to gain prominence within the Honda lineup. Honda anticipates that Civic hybrid models will constitute 40% of all Civic sales, a significant leap from its prior status as a niche model.
There is no mention of an all-wheel-drive hybrid system being added to the Civic. Honda confirmed the introduction of Honda AWD hybrids towards the end of the decade.
Following the premium feel of the Insight, Honda plans to position the Civic hybrids with additional features including an active noise control system across all trims, specialized tires for the hybrid model, and “wheel resonators” exclusive to Sport Touring trims.
Pricing details for the 2025 Civic Hybrid have not been disclosed yet. However, based on the pricing strategy for the CR-V and Accord hybrids, it may carry a premium of a few thousand dollars. The 2025 Civic Hybrid will be available in LX (sedan only), Sport Hybrid, and Sport Touring Hybrid variants. The Sport trim will come with added features such as a sunroof, heated front seats, and dual-zone climate controls.
The Sport Touring variant will also offer leather upholstery, a 12-speaker Bose audio system, and a larger 9.0-inch infotainment display with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration. Additionally, this top-tier Civic hybrid will be the first to feature built-in Google integration within the Civic lineup.
