The 2025 BMW X3 has been revamped, marking the beginning of its fourth generation. This new model features a fresh exterior design, which BMW describes as “almost monolithic,” presenting a simpler and cleaner appearance than its predecessor. However, one aspect that may attract mixed reactions is the inclusion of diagonal bars in the kidney grille, a style borrowed from the overseas-only 1 Series. This design choice is specific to the base model, while the M50 variant will showcase black horizontal bars.

The M50 designation represents a shift in BMW’s naming convention. The X3 now drops the “i” designation once used to signify direct injection, which is now reserved for electric vehicles. Instead, it will be available as the X3 30 xDrive for the base four-cylinder model or the X3 M50 xDrive featuring a straight-six engine. The M50, previously known as the M40i, retains the turbocharged 3.0-liter B58 six-cylinder but benefits from enhancements like redesigned intake ports and crankshaft drive. The M50 produces 393 horsepower, an increase of 11 horsepower, and can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.4 seconds. Additionally, this performance-oriented version includes an Adaptive M Sport suspension, variable sport steering, M Sport brakes, 20-inch wheels, and a rear M Sport differential.

For those seeking a more casual driving experience, the X3 30 features a 2.0-liter turbo-four engine producing 255 horsepower and reaches 60 mph in approximately six seconds. Both engine options incorporate 48-volt mild hybrid technology, resulting in smoother start-stop functionality and improved fuel efficiency. According to BMW, the new X3 provides superior handling and comfort on long trips compared to its predecessor, with a lighter yet more rigid body and a wider rear track. The vehicle’s dimensions have also been adjusted, making it 1.3 inches longer and 1.1 inches wider, while being one inch lower than the previous model.

Inside, designers have introduced significant innovations, including the dual-screen iDrive 9 system, newly styled seats, and an option for a woven fabric dash trim made from recycled materials. The cabin is also equipped with ambient interactive light bars beneath the screens, around the phone compartment, and on the door panels. In an eye-catching “license and registration, please” red and blue lighting scheme, the design emphasizes the vehicle’s practicality, highlighted by large door handles that remind users they are in a utility-focused BMW.

The price for the 2025 BMW X3 starts at $50,675 for the base four-cylinder model or $65,275 for the M50 variant. Production will take place in Spartanburg, South Carolina, with a release expected in the fourth quarter of 2024..
