Subaru’s petite crossover that possesses new aesthetics and bigger screens has been unveiled at the 2023 Chicago Auto Show. The 2024 Subaru Crosstrek, which initially saw daylight last year, in North America, stuck to its tradition of being propelled by one of two flat-four engines mated exclusively to a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT)—the manual option has been omitted—and all-wheel drive.

The starting price for the base model remains at $26,290, inclusive of essential delivery charges, mirroring its predecessor’s 2023 version. It will be available in base, Premium, Sport, and Limited configurations. The latter duo will benefit from an enhanced 2.5-liter flat-four engine generating 182 horsepower, unlike the base and Premium variants rocking a 2.0-liter flat-four with an output of 152 hp. The base and Premium editions are set to hit the market in spring, manufactured in Japan, while the Sport and Limited trims are expected in summer, assembled in Lafayette, Indiana.

The standout feature of the Crosstrek has always been its adeptness in a compact body. Much like its forerunner (and the majority of Subaru vehicles), the 2024 Crosstrek boasts 8.7 inches of ground clearance and robust body cladding. The conventional powertrain with CVT has faced occasional criticisms for its lethargy, a conundrum that the upgraded 2.5-liter flat-four has largely rectified since its introduction. While it may not be a top performer, Subaru has transferred the steering system from the WRX to give it a touch of vivacity on the roads.

Internally, the standard Crosstrek integrates twin 7.0-inch touchscreens for infotainment, with higher trims above the base adopting Subaru’s larger 11.6-inch tablet-style screen as standard. Subaru mentioned enhancing the sound insulation for quieter interiors and introducing more comfortable seating. The array of standard active safety features, termed “EyeSight” by Subaru, includes blind-spot monitoring and lane-keeping assistance, available on Premium and higher versions. Equipped models also incorporate automatic emergency steering, aiding in crash avoidance at speeds of 50 mph or lower.

The layout of the 2024 Crosstrek remains largely unaltered this year. It accommodates up to five occupants, though three adults in the back might prefer a more familiar setting, and the rear seats can fold down, creating a cargo capacity of up to 54.7 cubic feet. Despite its elevated ride height, the Crosstrek retains a low-load floor and a wide rear aperture for accommodating bulkier cargo.

Further details will surface when we test drive it this spring. Subaru’s popular Crosstrek continues to encompass the familiar essence of a compact crossover, even without the incorporation of hybrid powertrain technology. When questioned about a hybrid model, Subaru opted not to provide any comments.
