Back in 1985, Nissan introduced its small yet tough pickup truck to the US market. It was a sincere, basic, economical, and industrious truck that ignited the passion of numerous Nissan pickup truck aficionados. Fast forward to 2024, the Nissan Frontier Hardbody Edition pays homage to that original ’80s truck with its retro aesthetics and distinctive details.

The Hardbody Edition bundle is exclusively offered on Frontier SV Crew Cab 4×4 models and includes specialized 17-inch wheels wrapped in all-terrain tires, vintage-style decals, dark exterior accents, and a bed bar that exudes a strong ’80s vibe. According to Nissan, it also boasts “other groovy design elements.” Acquiring all these retro accessories will cost an additional $3,890 on top of the starting price of $38,205 for the Frontier Crew Cab 4×4.

The original Hardbody by Nissan wasn’t its initial compact pickup, but it was among the pioneering Nissans crafted in California, especially at the brand’s Nissan Design International Inc. (now known as Nissan Design America). Furthermore, it enjoyed considerable success in off-road racing, clinching victories at the Baja 1000, Mint 400, and Gold Coast 300 in 1987. In 2021, Nissan participated in the Rebelle Rally with a Frontier that resembled the Hardbody, so it’s logical for the brand to replicate the experience with the new Frontier Hardbody Edition.

Regrettably, one feature missing on the new model that the original Hardbody sported is a manual transmission. The latest Frontier Hardbody Edition is equipped with the same 3.8-liter V6 and nine-speed automatic transmission as all other 2024 Frontiers, in contrast to the original truck’s 3.0-liter V6 and five-speed manual.

In more Nissan Frontier updates, the Crew Cab (4-door) models are now offered in SL trim, boasting leather seats, LED headlights, and a 10-speaker Fender audio system. Additionally, all Frontier trims have experienced a slight price hike, with the base price escalating from $30,905 to $31,105.

The highlight remains the Hardbody Edition, guaranteed to delight any Nissan enthusiast with a hint of nostalgia. Its distinctive appearance sets it apart from the rest of the Frontiers, creating a truly special feel. Now, who’s up for a retro cassette player retrofit kit?
