2024 Mazda CX-90’s Latest Turbo Inline-6 Will Generate 340 Horsepower

Slated for inclusion in the upcoming 2024 Mazda CX-90, this 3.3-liter engine is set to deliver 340 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. These numbers represent the highest power output of any mass-produced petrol engine ever manufactured by Mazda. It’s noteworthy that this engine requires premium fuel to achieve such performance figures. Additionally, the engine will be equipped with a 48-volt mild hybrid system to enhance its efficiency.

The brand-new CX-90 will combine the fresh inline-six with Mazda’s latest rear-biased all-wheel-drive architecture. The vehicle is positioned to serve as a more upscale three-row crossover positioned at the apex of the brand’s SUV range. However, in addition to the inline-six powertrain, the model will also offer a distinct performance-focused plug-in hybrid variant in the near future. Full details regarding the new model are expected to be disclosed on January 31.

Mazda’s state-of-the-art inline-six has already made its debut in Australia, albeit in a slightly lower-tuned form. The Mazda CX-60 available in Australia is equipped with a 280 hp inline-six. Nonetheless, this particular model will not reach the American market. The forthcoming CX-90 has long been anticipated to boast higher power output, particularly considering Mazda’s existing US-market four-cylinder engine capable of producing 256 hp.

The arrival of Mazda’s new inline-six has been eagerly awaited, albeit in a differing guise than initially speculated. Early rumors indicated that this engine was destined for a luxurious rear-wheel-drive sedan as part of a new Mazda 6 iteration. Other speculations suggested it might find its way into a fresh sports car inspired by the captivating RX-Vision concept. Unfortunately, late 2022 saw the majority of these speculations dispelled, with executives hinting that the brand’s SUV lineup was indeed the ultimate destination for this new engine.

We are witnessing a resurgence of the inline-six engine in recent times. Companies like Mercedes, Land Rover, and Stellantis have all introduced new inline-six engines in the past few years. With vehicles becoming heavier and emissions standards becoming stricter, this comes as no surprise. Larger inline-six units offer increased torque and power compared to smaller inline-fours, fulfilling the power and performance demands expected in the premium automotive segment. Furthermore, the inline-six configuration offers superior balance, resulting in a smoother driving experience with reduced vibrations compared to other engine layouts.
