Amidst the electrification trend in the automotive industry, car manufacturers are seizing the opportunity to bring about a significant alteration in visual aesthetics. The latest Kia EV9 showcases that the South Korean automaker is leading the pack with its fresh three-row SUV.

Kia is keeping some details of the EV9 under wraps for now, with specifics on power and range set to be revealed later this month. However, what is evident is that the era of the large electric SUV has arrived. Featuring spacious three-row seating, a bold design aimed at the future, Kia has made it clear that it intends to set a new standard with this release.

The EV9 boasts a sharply-angled polygonal body design that avoids resembling a reject from Tron. The robust character line running along the pumped fenders, front and rear, splits into a uniquely triangular kick, creating an almost wide-body appearance around the doors, which appear relatively indented. With its imposing posture, the EV9 carries off this look flawlessly.

Both the front and rear running lights feature vertical, zigzag designs that seem integrated into the vehicle’s very lines. Additionally, Kia touts the sleek and straightforward ‘Digital Tiger Face’ front-end design. Noteworthy elements include the retractable door handles and the cross-pattern wheels elegantly showcased in the promotional images.

Regarding the interior design, the EV9 draws inspiration from Kia’s current lineup of electric vehicles. Featuring a sleek and organized infotainment system, complemented by a digital instrument cluster and a blend of physical buttons and touch controls to cater to all preferences. Moreover, families will appreciate the ample cupholders and storage space provided. The cabin is designed to feel spacious and airy, allowing room for everyone to unwind comfortably, contrasting with the more compact layout of the Kia EV6.

Furthermore, the interior offers flexible configurations that will appeal to families and adventure enthusiasts alike. The second-row seats have the capability to rotate 180 degrees, enabling occupants to face those in the third row for conversations or debates. Additionally, both the front and second-row seats can be reclined simultaneously, providing a convenient feature for when everyone needs a rest during a charging stop. Kia will offer the EV9 in six- and seven-seat variants to accommodate diverse preferences.

The production vehicle has stayed true to the initial concept, which is quite rare. In 2021, Kia unveiled the Concept EV9, and its design has seamlessly transitioned into what we have now. The major alteration was Kia opting out of the concept’s rear suicide doors, but that’s not a significant loss. It’s always exciting when a company not only dares to have big aspirations but also turns those aspirations into reality.

Due to its size, the EV9 will fulfill a similar role to the ICE-powered Telluride in Kia’s range. The 2021 Concept EV9 was 194 inches in length, with a 122-inch wheelbase, standing 81 inches wide and 70 inches tall. This makes it an inch taller and three inches wider than the Telluride. Even though it’s three inches shorter overall, the wheelbase is 7.8 inches longer. If these dimensions remain relatively unchanged in the production EV9, it should offer a very roomy interior, possibly even more spacious than the already roomy Telluride.

With more car manufacturers entering this segment, the three-row electric vehicle market will become highly competitive. Based on what we’ve observed so far, it’s evident that Kia has made a strong initial move.
