While not exactly mainstream, the Kia EV9 is very family-friendly.

Kia’s latest electric vehicle, the EV9, may not have generated the buzz it deserves. This remarkable vehicle is not only a first for non-premium brands in the U.S. with its 3-row electric crossover design, but it also stands out as an impressive option in the crossover market.

2024 Kia EV9 First Impressions

A comprehensive review of the EV9 from Consumer Guide is on the way. However, I recently had the chance to test drive the EV9 alongside Green Sense Show host Robert Colangelo. Here are my insights on this innovative, family-friendly electric vehicle.

Considering the Electric Telluride

Measuring 197 inches in total length, the EV9 is identical in size to the Kia Telluride, the brand’s midsize 3-row crossover. It provides a comparable amount of space, comfort, and room. The first two rows comfortably accommodate adults, while the third row is suitable for most children, as well as adaptable teenagers.

However, the cargo area’s load floor is notably higher than that of the Telluride, a necessity due to the positioning of the rear motor assembly, which is highlighted in the cutaway of the EV9 below.

Promising Range

On a pleasant summer day in Chicago, the EV9 displayed nearly 300 miles of range on a 90% charge, exceeding its EPA-estimated range of 270 miles. Factors contributing to this impressive range could include favorable weather, Robert’s relaxed driving habits, and possibly conservative EPA estimates. Regardless, it’s reassuring to know the EV9 should perform reliably on long-distance road trips.

Dynamically Engaging

The dual-motor (AWD) EV9 GT-Line that I tested was quick and responsive. With a powerful 379 horsepower, the EV9 accelerates swiftly, delivering immediate power typical of electric vehicles. The braking system is dependable and smooth, avoiding the inconsistent pedal feel that can occur in some hybrid and electric models. (Many hybrids and EVs utilize regenerative braking systems to harness energy typically lost during braking, which can help extend their electric range.)

Comfortable Ride

Similar to the Cadillac Lyriq EV crossover, the EV9 offers a decent ride, but it doesn’t quite reach the highest standards of ride comfort. Smooth ride quality is a key feature of family-oriented crossovers, and like many electric vehicles, the EV9 lacks the road isolation provided by traditional gas-powered options.

This could be attributed to its heavy weight; the test vehicle, equipped with a larger 100-kWh battery (the base EV9 models come with a 76-kWh battery), tips the scales at a hefty 5,800 pounds—over half a ton more than the gasoline-powered Telluride. While the EV9 performs well on well-maintained surfaces, it may exhibit more body movement and harsher feedback than expected over larger bumps and ruts.

In short, the EV9 rides adequately, but the Telluride offers a more comfortable experience on rough roads.

Luxury Pricing

The GT-Line package, which features the long-range battery and AWD, carries a steep price tag. Our test EV9, including the optional GT-Line 2nd Row Relaxation Package ($2000), totaled just over $78,000. For context, this price aligns with that of luxury vehicles. However, it is important to note that premium crossovers can be significantly more expensive, and there are more affordable versions of the EV9 available.

The Wind AWD is the entry-level model of the EV9 that includes both the long-range battery and AWD. With no added options, the Wind AWD starts at just under $66,000, which is comparable to a fully-equipped Telluride.

Although the Wind may lack some features compared to the top-spec Telluride SX Prestige, its lower starting price may attract families genuinely interested in transitioning to electric vehicles.

Final Thoughts

While the EV9 isn’t positioned as a budget option, it is a capable and enjoyable large crossover that boasts numerous family-friendly features. Aside from its pricing, it offers substantial performance and an eco-friendly driving experience.

We are highly impressed with the EV9 and eagerly await the potential for a more accessible lineup that will appeal to environmentally-conscious families seeking a spacious vehicle for their adventures.
