Honda is edging closer to entering the electric crossover market, aligning with competitors such as Tesla, Hyundai, Chevy, and soon Volvo. Stepping closer to production, the 2024 Honda Prologue, without an exact release date yet, is anticipated to kick off deliveries early next year. Relying on GM Ultium-based battery and powertrain technologies, Honda disclosed on Thursday its anticipation of a 300-mile estimated range by the EPA.
Despite boasting unique styling from Honda’s Design Studio in Los Angeles, the Prologue is subtly reminiscent of the brand’s present design ethos. Featuring unassuming body contours, compact overhangs, a sleek roofline, and a modest front grille, the familial resemblance with the CRV and Civic is evident. This works in its favor, presenting an attractive compact crossover with a straightforward yet dynamic interior and a sizable state-of-the-art infotainment display.
However, beneath its Honda-esque exterior, the new Honda Prologue predominantly embodies American engineering. At its core lies GM’s Ultium electric platform, furnishing it with an 85 kWh battery pack projected by Honda to enable a maximum range of 300 miles and a 155 kW charging capacity. Honda asserts the Prologue can receive 65 miles of range within 10 minutes at that rate. Offering two powertrain configurations: front-wheel-drive with a single motor or all-wheel-drive with a dual-motor setup. The latter generating 288 horsepower and 333 lb-ft of torque, closely aligned with the all-wheel-drive Chevy Equinox EV specifications, a result of shared platform underpinnings.
While Honda hasn’t detailed the power metrics for the front-wheel-drive Prologue, it’s anticipated to match the front-wheel-drive Equinox EV with 210 horsepower and a 280-mile range. Given the shared battery pack between both models, the extent of Honda’s estimated range remains intriguing, particularly concerning the dual-motor versus single-motor variant.
Notably, Honda presents a selection of three distinct charging packages. The first includes an 11.5-kW home charging station, a $100 public charging credit, and a $500 installation incentive. The second option comprises a 7.6-kW portable charging kit, a $300 public charging kit, and a $250 installation incentive. Alternatively, a $750 public charging credit can also be availed.
Honda anticipates the Prologue to be priced starting in the upper $40,000 range before factoring in any potential government tax incentives.
