The 2024
GMC Hummer EV Pickup and SUV exhibit immense proportions and substantial battery capacity, which could seem imposing. However, they have now acquired the capability to distribute energy. This is due to the introduction of a new 19.2-kWh Level 2 onboard charger, allowing the rugged off-roaders to charge other
EVs up to
6 kW in 2024. (Previous Hummer EV
Pickups could provide charging up to 11.5 kW.)
At a recent
event for the Hummer EV SUV near San Francisco, the addition of this feature was unveiled.
GMC executives demonstrated the ability to charge one Hummer with another, highlighting bidirectional charging as one of the enhancements inspired by early customer feedback to enhance the utility of these large vehicles.
Lead vehicle engineer Aaron Pfau mentioned to
The Drive, “There is no other product in the market that offers all these functionalities.” Pfau also indicated the batteries’ capability to switch between series and parallel modes mechanically to enable fast-charging speeds (up to
300 kW) when not linked to another Hummer.
The onboard charger is standard on 2024 GMC Hummers starting from the 2X trim level. It can also power other devices up to 3 kW, making the vehicle a mobile generator. Both EV-to-EV charging and generator operations necessitate an optional cable provided by GMC.
This year, the Hummer EV SUV joins its pickup counterpart on showroom floors. The SUV, shorter by nine inches than the pickup, features a slightly altered battery arrangement to accommodate the reduced length. It offers a similar core setup: substantial battery capacity, boxy appearance, and remarkable performance delivered by its three electric motors generating 830 horsepower and 11,500 pound-feet of torque at the colossal 22-inch wheels (or on off-road models, rugged 18-inch wheels with MT tires).
The 2024 GMC Hummer EV will be available for purchase this year starting at $79,995, inclusive of destination charges. Stay tuned for our upcoming review of the 2024 Hummer EV SUV.
