Unveiling at the New York Auto Show this week, the 2023 Subaru Outback undergoes a mid-cycle refresh to resemble the new WRX more closely.

A favorite in Subaru’s lineup for those desiring SUV spaciousness with a wagon-like aesthetic, the Outback’s latest update emphasizes a shift towards an adventure wagon persona rather than an SUV, despite Subaru’s official classification.

The most notable change lies in its styling. The vehicle now boasts an assertive front-end with an expanded grille and revamped lighting, prominently showcasing fog lights. There’s a heightened presence of plastic, with redesigned exterior cladding on the front bumper and wheel arches, blending elements of the new 2023 WRX and the upcoming 2023 Solterra EV, leaning towards adventure aesthetics.

Little alteration is discernible at the rear. If not for the slightly repositioned reflectors, identifying the 2023 Outback post-modification may prove challenging. Additionally, the existing Subaru Outback Wilderness won’t see any design modifications in 2023.

Under the hood, performance remains consistent with two engine options. The base model retains a 2.5-liter naturally aspirated boxer engine generating 182 horsepower and 176 pound-feet of torque, while the robust XT variants will sport a 2.4-liter turbocharged boxer engine delivering 260 horsepower and 277 lb-ft of torque. Subaru’s CVT with an eight-speed simulated manual mode will be standard across all trims.

Several in-cabin and safety tech updates have been implemented.

All trims featuring Blind-Spot Detection with Lane Change Assist and Rear Cross-Traffic Alert will now include Automatic Emergency Steering below 50 miles per hour. The flagship Touring model introduces an additional forward-facing camera working in conjunction with the existing dual Subaru EyeSight cameras. This wide-angle mono camera aids in detecting pedestrians and cyclists, especially during low-speed intersection maneuvers. Subaru touts its integration with the emergency braking system to halt the vehicle when necessary.

The Outback presents an updated version of its portrait-oriented 11.6-inch infotainment display, now supporting wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, along with What3Words integration for enthusiasts favoring in-car navigation. The Touring variant includes a brand-new LCD rear-view mirror.
