Bentley Introduces the Bentayga Extended Wheelbase: A Plush New SUV

In a surprising shift, Bentley has discontinued the Mulsanne super-luxury 6¾-liter V8 limousine after 11 years of production. The brand is welcoming a new model, the 2023 Bentley Bentayga Extended Wheelbase (EWB), a significant departure from its predecessor, opting for a spacious SUV design. Rather than projecting an air of ruling authority, the well-off will now be seen navigating the streets more like stylish parents on their way to soccer practice.

While the Bentayga EWB may not fit the shadowy or royal image one might expect from Bentley, it aligns with the growing demand for SUVs. The new model extends the wheelbase by an extra seven inches (180mm), enhancing rear cabin space significantly.

Preview and Space

During a preview held just outside London, the difference was immediately apparent. The additional seven inches drastically transformed the Bentayga’s interior. Even without being particularly tall, I was able to recline comfortably in the luxurious Bentley leather. The front seat, having been pushed as far forward as possible—given that it’s designed for a driver only—allowed ample space to stretch my legs without touching the seat in front.

Technical Specs and Engine Performance

The Bentayga EWB unchanged in terms of engine specifications, retains the powerful 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 engine, delivering 542 brake horsepower and 568 pound-feet of torque. According to Bentley, this SUV can accelerate from zero to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds, with a top speed of 180 mph.

Although the initial launch features the V8, there’s a possibility of introducing alternative engines in the future. However, the legendary W12 engine is now exclusive to specific markets through the Bentayga Speed model. Bentley’s focus is primarily on the V8 as it is the most popular option within the Bentayga lineup. They are also considering a hybrid variant for the EWB model, although it’s not currently available.

Revised Dimensions

When compared to the standard Bentayga, the EWB saw its wheelbase grow from 118 inches (2,995mm) to 125 inches (3,175mm), while the overall length now stands at 209.5 inches (5,322mm). To put that into perspective, even an entire Mazda Miata measures only 154.1 inches in length. This extra length is exclusively incorporated in the rear cabin, which has led to new rear doors, an updated underfloor structure, and a redesigned roof that now features a sunroof positioned to enhance the rear cabin experience.

Stylish Redesigns and Comfort Features

To differentiate the EWB from its smaller siblings, Bentley made several cosmetic enhancements, including a new vertical grille, 22-inch wheels, and, of course, those oversized rear doors. Inside, the cabin has been meticulously redesigned to ensure maximum comfort with new veneers and trims, featuring power-closing doors. Different seating arrangements are available, including luxurious throne-like seats with a central console, a traditional bench, or seats with an occasional middle and foldaway armrest.

The Airline Seat Specification, a standout feature among options, offers 22 ways of adjustment along with wellness functions aimed at preventing fatigue. This high-tech seat can adjust its heating and cooling based on external temperature and humidity, as well as provide minute adjustments to relieve pressure points across six zones, making it an extraordinary addition.

Luxury and Detailing

As a flagship model, the EWB boasts exquisite details such as new diamond quilting with a unique sub-one-mm perforation pattern. The quilting extends from the center of the seats outward, while the door panels adopt an asymmetric pattern to highlight their extended length.

The use of fine thread in the quilting process enhances its luxurious feel, while the incorporation of carefully designed lighting solutions amplifies the unique ambiance of the interior. In fact, the quilting pattern is meticulously crafted to align perfectly with the overall aesthetic, creating a sophisticated visual harmony.

Bentley has also introduced a cutting-edge metal overlay, achieved through a precision photo-etching technique that results in intricate designs without compromising the structural integrity of the metal.

Conclusion: Will it Replace the Mulsanne?

The Bentayga EWB is undeniably impressive, offering immense space, comfort, and luxury. It strikes a balance between elegance and practicality, although it might not quite embody the traditional notion of a Bentley. While it is set to dominate the luxury SUV market, it remains to be seen if it can fully replace the iconic image of the Mulsanne.

Reports suggest Bentley anticipates that 45% of its Bentayga sales will be attributed to the new EWB model. As attitudes shift, what was once synonymous with a grand sedan could soon become emblematic of a luxury SUV.

Pricing details have yet to be disclosed, but this remarkable vehicle is poised to make waves in the luxury vehicle market later this year.
