The introduction of the 2023 Alfa Romeo Tonale in North America will see a reduction in available options. Upon its launch in the U.S. market in 2023, the vehicle will forgo the 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine variant and will be equipped solely with a plug-in hybrid drivetrain. As reported by Automotive News Europe, Alfa Romeo’s CEO Jean-Philippe Imparato mentioned that this transition to a hybrid powertrain is expected to decrease the brand’s overall emissions by 40 percent.

We have contacted Alfa Romeo for further insights and will provide an update to this narrative upon receiving additional information.

Prospective buyers anticipating a sporty crossover might find solace in this development. The plug-in hybrid Tonale not only boasts lower emissions compared to the 2.0-liter variant but also delivers increased power. Featuring a 1.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine propelling the front wheels and an electric motor powering the rear wheels, the Tonale hybrid generates a combined output of 272 horsepower, surpassing the 256 horsepower of the 2.0-liter Tonale. Additionally, the hybrid variant offers a commendable electric range of over 30 miles, enhancing its versatility when compared to the standard model.

Interestingly, the Dodge Hornet, which shares mechanical similarities with the Tonale, will exclusively offer the standard turbo-four in the U.S. without the hybrid option. Given their identical mechanical underpinnings and similar aesthetics, consumers will have the liberty to choose between distinct powertrain configurations. Furthermore, both models will be manufactured in Italy, implying minimal disparities between the two.

While the Alfa Romeo Tonale has been available in Europe for a few months, its U.S. debut is scheduled for the upcoming year, with reservations for the Tonale hybrid commencing on November 17. The reception of the Tonale hybrid among American consumers remains uncertain at this juncture; nevertheless, Imparato asserts that Alfa Romeo has already amassed 35,000 reservations for the Tonale hybrid in Europe.
