Following last month’s introduction of the revamped 2022 Chevy Silverado, GMC is preparing to unveil an eagerly awaited mid-cycle refresh for its flagship Sierra pickup. This tech-savvy update includes a host of new features such as an upgraded interior and hands-free Super Cruise driving assistance, as well as an exterior makeover with redesigned headlights. Additionally, the lineup will now feature two new luxury and off-road trims, enhancing GMC’s standing in the premium pickup market. With pickup sales booming and the Sierra headed toward a record-breaking sales year, this update reflects GMC’s commitment to providing the necessary amenities expected from a top-tier half-ton truck.
While the term “new trims” may not sound particularly thrilling, the offerings within the Sierra Denali Ultimate and Sierra AT4X promise to impress. The Denali Ultimate comes equipped with standard features such as Super Cruise, a 6.2L V8 engine, and a carbon-fiber bed. Meanwhile, the AT4X emerges as the latest off-road flagship for the Sierra, sharing similarities with the new Chevy Silverado ZR2, including Multimatic DSSV dampers, both front and rear lockers, upgraded suspension, and the same robust 6.2L V8 engine.
One of the key aspects that truck buyers, especially those looking to tow, will appreciate is power. The 6.2-liter V8 engine boasts an impressive 420 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque. For those who prefer diesel, there is also an optional 277-horsepower turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six diesel engine, offering the same torque. Other trims in the lineup can be fitted with a 355-horsepower 5.3-liter V8 or an economical 2.7-liter turbo four-cylinder that produces 310 horsepower. All V8 and diesel engines are paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission, while the smaller turbo engine comes with an eight-speed automatic.
Under the hood lies a completely redesigned front fascia. The Denali Ultimate model features a wider grille adorned with Vader Chrome and distinctive front fender trim to set it apart from other Sierra variations. The truck showcases sleek new headlights and refined design elements, giving it a modern touch while retaining familiar features like the multi-pro tailgate and CarbonPro bed. To enhance its luxurious appeal, GMC has also introduced unique 22-inch low-gloss-black wheels.
The most significant transformations are found within. The Sierra’s interior has undergone a complete overhaul for 2022, shedding the outdated GM design that has persisted since the late 2000s. The new layout prioritizes modern aesthetics, modularity, and luxury, enhanced by advanced technology integration. Notably, GMC claims that the Sierra Denali Ultimate features over 40 inches of total display area for drivers, including a comprehensive heads-up display.
At the center, drivers will find a 13.4-inch infotainment display powered by a variant of Google’s Android Automotive OS. This screen offers built-in Google services such as Maps, Assistant, and the Play Store, enabling users to run Android apps like Spotify without relying on their phones. The split-screen capability allows drivers to access both infotainment and navigation features simultaneously.
Additionally, a second 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster is positioned directly in front of the driver. This display can be configured to show essential driving information like speed, or more detailed metrics such as oil temperature, tire pressure, and drivetrain mode. Much of this data can also be projected onto the windshield via a 15-inch multicolor Head-Up Display.
Another notable feature in the Denali Ultimate is GM’s hands-free driver assistance technology, Super Cruise. Experience with this system indicates its effectiveness, particularly advantageous when towing—a scenario for which the Sierra Denali is ideally suited. GM claims that drivers can utilize hands-free capabilities on over 200,000 miles of compatible roads, and the integrated Google Maps app can even recommend routes that support Super Cruise.
When activated, Super Cruise manages steering, braking, and lane changes, provided that drivers maintain their focus on the road. However, GM does impose some restrictions on using Super Cruise while towing; for example, the truck does not automatically switch lanes while towing a trailer. It’s also essential for drivers to input the trailer length so the system can accurately assess factors like braking distance and cornering speed.
Super Cruise comes standard in the Denali Ultimate and is available as an option for the regular Denali. GMC has announced that this feature will have a subscription model, with the first three years complimentary with the vehicle. Details on monthly fees and hardware costs for the standard Denali remain forthcoming, although prior estimates from Cadillac suggest around $25 monthly and a $2,500 one-time hardware fee for the Escalade.
The remainder of the interior is also noteworthy. Every surface is treated with high-quality materials, and luxury elements like etched metal and laser-engraved wood enhance the Denali’s upscale feel. Even the seats come with topographical map designs, a signature of the GMC brand.
Turning our attention to the AT4X, this model builds on one of GMC’s most sought-after off-road trims, aimed squarely at younger, more affluent consumers who desire both capability and advanced technology in a vehicle suitable for everyday use.
The AT4X introduces electronic locking differentials at both the front and rear axles, as well as Multimatic DSSV Spool-Valve Dampers for an enhanced driving experience both on and off the road. Unique to the AT4X is GMC’s one-pedal driving feature, which allows the driver to control the vehicle using only the accelerator. This innovation enables the truck to accelerate, decelerate, and stop simply by adjusting the gas pedal.
GMC has indicated that the new 2022 Sierra models will start arriving at dealerships in the first quarter of 2022, with reservations now open. The base Sierra is anticipated to begin at $32,495, while the AT4X will retail for $74,995—a $14,000 premium over the standard AT4—and the Denali Ultimate will come in at $80,392, which is $19,100 more than the regular Denali.
