The 2021 Acura TLX Type S makes a bold impression, clearly showcasing Acura’s signature strengths. Soon, Acura will give us another reason to pay attention with the launch of its second Type S performance model: the 2022 Acura MDX Type S. This new model marks the brand’s first true sporty crossover that also boasts towing capabilities.

The MDX Type S, the larger of the two current Type S models, is driven by a turbocharged V6 engine, which produces 355 horsepower and 354 pound-feet of torque, matching the output of the TLX Type S. This likely features the same 3.0-liter V6 engine. Its power is transmitted through a 10-speed automatic transmission to the torque-vectoring SH-AWD system, enhanced by a unique Sport+ driving mode. This setting sharpens vehicle responses, enabling full use of the MDX Type S’s double-wishbone front suspension and its Brembo front brakes.

The Brembo brakes will come in useful, allowing the MDX Type S to maximize its towing capacity of 5,000 pounds. Its debut will include pulling a TLX Type S race car from Ohio to Colorado, where it will join another TLX and two American-made NSX supercars for the prestigious Pikes Peak hill climb race, scheduled for Sunday, June 27.

The 2022 Acura MDX Type S is set to follow closely behind its impressive yet refined predecessor, the TLX Type S, making its way to dealerships by the end of 2021. Additional details will be released as the launch date approaches, including a potential Nürburgring lap time for a fun comparison with the latest crossover lap record holder.
