If you’re curious about what GMC has planned for the 2020 Canyon mid-size pickup truck, a good starting point might be the trailers in and around Jackson, Wyoming. During a recent event showcasing the Sierra HD and Sierra 1500 diesel, GMC revealed a camouflaged prototype of the Canyon, cleverly hidden inside a box trailer. This unveiling was part of a demonstration of the camera system found on the heavy-duty Sierra models.
The new Sierra HD is equipped with various cameras that allow drivers to see a wide range of angles. One of the standout features is an “invisible trailer” view, which significantly enhances awareness while towing, whether you’re pulling the truck’s maximum capacity of 35,500 pounds or more. Additionally, there’s a camera that lets you check the interior of your trailer or RV, ensuring your valuable cargo is safe and sound.
Inside one of the trailers, GMC also had the updated 2020 Canyon AT4 on display. Set to debut in early 2020, the company is remaining tight-lipped regarding the specific enhancements but has indicated that the AT4 features will be available across the entire GMC lineup.
So, what extra features can we expect from the AT4 Canyon beyond those of a standard off-road truck? While attempting to find out during a media event, I took part in a driver swap and was left alone for a few minutes. However, I was unable to unlock the trailer’s side door with the Sierra HD keys, as the rear locks were combination locks — it almost seemed like the GMC communication team anticipated that issue.
Regardless, it is anticipated that the Canyon AT4 will offer more off-road capabilities than a regular Canyon. This could potentially mean the inclusion of Rancho monotube shocks, similar to those found on the Sierra and Sierra HD. However, it would be exciting if the new Canyon AT4 turned out to be GMC’s counterpart to the Colorado ZR2, featuring Multimatic DSSV dampers. Given the similarities between the Canyon and Colorado platforms, this possibility seems realistic.
Additionally, it’s expected that the AT4 will come with both gasoline and diesel engine options, especially since GMC currently offers both on its AT4 Sierra and AT4 Sierra HD models. The diesel engine is already available in standard Canyon models.
We can expect to learn more about the Canyon AT4 in early next year..
