Toyota debuted its luxury division, Lexus, in 1989 to rival established German brands, launching with the flagship Lexus LS as well as the more budget-friendly ES 250, which was based on the then-current Camry. Although the ES is no longer the entry-level option for Lexus, it remains a significant contributor to the brand’s sales. Nearly three decades later, Lexus aims to further elevate its mid-size sedan lineup with the arrival of the seventh-generation ES.

The all-new ES was introduced in Beijing, showcasing a more angular design that contrasts with the softer lines of its predecessor. The choice of Beijing for the launch was likely influenced by the preferences of Chinese customers, who tend to favor long-wheelbase sedans.

The 2019 ES boasts dimensions that include an increase of 2.6 inches in length, a reduction of 0.2 inches in height, and a width extension of 1.8 inches compared to the model it replaces. Despite a history of differing designs, the new ES borrows several exterior aesthetic elements from the recently released LS.

Today, any Lexus model is defined by its prominent spindle grille, which takes center stage. The L-shaped daytime running lights have also become a key feature of the brand’s distinctive style. The ES upholds these characteristics and, for the first time, will also be available in a sportier F Sport trim.

The 2019 ES will provide two new engine options. The standard model features a 3.5-liter V6 engine, delivering 302 horsepower and 267 pound-feet of torque, and is mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. The ES 300h, on the other hand, combines a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with an electric motor, achieving a total output of 215 horsepower. This hybrid variant boasts a fuel efficiency of 44 miles per gallon, representing a 10 percent improvement over last year’s model.

While pricing details have yet to be disclosed, it is anticipated that the starting price will be similar to that of the 2018 model, which was set at $38,950, when the new model is released later this year.
