Subaru is actively revamping its vehicle lineup to give the brand a fresh appeal. Following substantial updates to the Impreza and Legacy models, and the introduction of a new Crosstrek, the company has now revealed its first three-row SUV for the American market: the Ascent. Scheduled to hit showrooms later this year as a 2019 model, the Ascent is anticipated to be a significant seller, perfectly catering to the U.S. consumer base.

This crossover encapsulates Subaru’s strengths, featuring a higher center of gravity for improved ground clearance and the capability to navigate rough terrain, especially with its standard all-wheel-drive system. The Ascent’s adventurous design and durable materials suggest a readiness for any adventure.

The Ascent will be constructed on Subaru’s new SGP (Subaru Global Platform) architecture. This is a crucial development as the manufacturer plans to transition many upcoming models to this platform, and early signs indicate a promising start. The enhanced dynamics are expected to improve the driving experience while maintaining versatility across Subaru’s lineup.

In a noteworthy change, the Ascent will feature a new 2.4L turbocharged Boxer engine—the first of its kind for Subaru. This move signals a departure from six-cylinder engines used in their lineup, prioritizing efficiency and fuel economy.

With dimensions comparable to competitors such as the Honda Pilot and Mazda CX-9, the Ascent is indeed spacious. Measuring 204.7 inches in length, it offers ample space for seven passengers, making it considerably larger than the Forester and taller than the Outback. This size positions it in a market segment where Subaru has previously been underrepresented.

Further details regarding the 2019 Ascent, including pricing and availability, will be announced soon. Stay tuned for more updates on this practical crossover, which is expected to showcase a more production-ready appearance in the near future, refining some of its more extravagant features.
