Following its successful debut and the enthusiasm from hot hatch enthusiasts, the limited-edition Honda Civic Type R is set to reach a broader audience. Although the 2017 Civic Type R just launched in June, the 2018 version is already available for purchase.

The 2018 Civic Type R starts at $34,100, representing a modest increase of $215 from its predecessor, with no significant changes to the model itself. As with earlier versions, the new CTR features Honda’s well-regarded turbocharged 2.0-liter VTEC engine, generating 306 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. Additionally, this performance hatchback is equipped with a 6-speed manual transmission, a limited-slip differential, a suspension designed to reduce torque steer, and an adaptive damper system for enhanced ride comfort.

Even with its sporty character, the new Type R functions as a fully-loaded Civic. This means standard amenities include satellite navigation, smartphone integration via Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, along with numerous other conveniences that are common in other Civic models. Honda has not overlooked safety features either, equipping the Type R with Brake Assist, Electronic Brake Distribution, Stability Assist/Traction Control, and a multi-angle rearview camera.

There are hopes that the expanded availability and the introduction of a new model year will help alleviate the excessive markups seen at dealerships for the Civic Type R. With more powerful iterations of the hot hatch anticipated, it is hoped that Honda will take a stand similar to that of Dodge, restricting dealerships that significantly overcharged for the 2017 CTR from receiving new versions of the vehicle.

The Civic Type R is an exceptional performance car, but it is hard to justify a price tag of $50,000 for it.
